Prominent French Jewish Billionaire Shot Dead In ‘Professional Hit’

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

A billionaire French hotelier has been shot dead ‘in a professional hit’ in the Paris mansion he bought to showcase his Art Deco collection.

Claude Dray, 76, was found with three bullet holes in the neck in Neuilly-sur-Seine, the Paris suburb where President Nicolas Sarkozy built his career and still owns property.

He was found by his butler dressed only in a T-shirt and shorts, in his bedroom at 9am on Tuesday.

Bullet cartridges were found next to Mr Dray, with detectives saying they were fired from a pistol which was around 15 years old. No weapon was found.

There were no signs of a struggle and nothing was stolen from the palatial ‘Villa Madrid’, which is considered to be one of the most secure houses the French capital.

Police said it had the hallmarks of a ‘professional hit.’

‘Somebody got in and fired three bullets into the victim’s neck,’ said one detective at the scene, adding that a silencer had likely been used as domestic staff heard nothing.

His wife, Simone, was in the US, where four years ago her husband bought the famous National Hotel in South Beach, Miami.
Mr Dray, one of the most prominent Jews in France, also owned the Hotel de Paris in St Tropez, one of the most popular celebrity institutions on the French Riviera, as well as a string of other hotels around the world.

He had bought Villa Madrid in 1990 as he and his wife built up a vast Art Deco collection of furniture and other objects, which featured some 25 pieces by Jacques-Emile Ruhlmann alone.

Hirschman The Victim Talks From His Hospital Bed

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

Avraham Hirschman, who was beaten by Gur Chassidim in Geula earlier in the week spoke with Chadrei Chareidim from his Hadassah Ein Kerem bed.

“I left the Har Tzvi Shul with two others and suddenly, a group of 15 people, Gerrer Chassidim, some wearing masks, attacked me. They had metallic rods and sticks and began beating me. At first, they ran after me and began beating me all over my body. A number of chassidim were standing at the side and watching. They seem to have been “out-lookers”, making sure no one came to assist me.

I davened to Hashem to save me, as quickly as possible. I tried to defend myself and suddenly, I heard the shouts of passers-by who were shouting at the people beating me. I know that some people were there and saw and can identify some of the attackers.

The escalation of violence in Meah Shearim between the sikrikim and Gerrer Chassidim have reached unprecedented levels. Unfortunately, the old time residents of the community are once again victims, as they are when garbage bins are burned and roads are closed in protests. The new generation chossid seems to live by a different code, and the respect, tolerance and modesty of yesteryear is a thing of the past. The conflict regarding the hekdesh and Batei Warsaw is not about to be resolved any day soon, and it involves a great deal of money, power and control. Hence, the battle is just getting underway.

Police are actively investigating the beating of Hirschman, which some say was justified while others express outrage, but what is certain is that the violence plaguing Meah Shearim and the surrounding areas is just beginning, not ending.

Exercise & Your Mental Health An Overview

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

The evidence that using exercise regimens is effective in treating negative emotional and mental states is building. In the last ten years, several review articles have summarized the research in the field, stating a positive correlation between increasing levels of aerobic exercise and the extent to which symptoms of anxiety, depression, and even the most serious psychiatric conditions can be improved by intensive physical activity.

In my own practice as a psychiatrist in Bnei Brak and Jerusalem, I have begun implementing this new understanding, prescribing intensive physical activity in addition to psychopharmacological intervention even at the earliest visits at the onset of symptoms. It might seem counter-intuitive to encourage people to exercise whose symptoms might include feelings of sluggishness and fatigue in depressive states, for example, or panic symptoms such as shortness of breath, dizziness, and numbness. However, the reality is that often we see that the severity and duration of patients’ conditions can be diminished when prescribed vigorous exercise, especially when it is accompanied by competent practitioners.

While the field is still young and requires further research to prove these facts unequivocally, many of these findings are starting to be buttressed by more and more trials and analyses in research studies that demonstrate this positive “dose-effect” correlation. That is, the more intensive and prolonged exercise in which a patient can invest, the more positive effect that s/he will see. Because of this, I also encourage my patients that engaging in more intensive exercise will enable them to discontinue their psychiatric medications sooner.

To this effect, I am happy to team up with competent exercise professionals who are eager to work with those suffering from varied psychological maladies. Alan Freishtat and his team at “Lose It!” in Jerusalem combine psychological counseling, Behavioral Therapy and Exercise coaching along with basic Nutritional Counseling to achieve quicker results in alleviating negative psychological states.  I have had personal experience with them that has yielded positive outcomes.

It is commonly known that exercise is considered very good medicine for many physiological problems such as the prevention of heart disease, cancer, diabetes, obesity and countless other physical problems.  More and more, exercise is being recommended by doctors and other health providers across the board in place of or and in conjunction with medication for high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes and even gastrointestinal issues. But one area that has not received much publicity is the increased use of exercise to help those with common mental illnesses.  Mental health disorders affect about 20% of the population in the United States today.  Mental disorders are the leading cause of disability (lost years of productive life) in North America and Europe. By 2020, major depressive illness will be the leading cause of disability in the world for women and children. But the good news is that treatments for serious mental illnesses today are highly effective; between 70 and 90% of individuals have significant reduction of symptoms and improved quality of life with a combination of pharmacological and psychosocial treatments and supports, of exercise can be a significant component. Some of these disorders are short-term problems while others are classified as severe mental illness.  In any case, exercise is being used more and more as a first-line treatment for many forms of mental illness.

The definition of mental health describes a state of emotional and psychological well-being in which an individual is able to use his or her cognitive and emotional capabilities, function in society, and meet the ordinary demands of everyday life. From the perspective of positive psychology or holism, mental health may include an individual’s ability to enjoy life and to strike a balance between life activities and efforts to achieve a sound psychological state. Mental health is an expression of emotions, and signifies a successful adaptation to a range of demands.

This 4-part series will focus on Depression, Postpartum Depression, Anxiety, Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD/ADHD), Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Panic Disorder. At its conclusion, the reader will have a reasonable understanding of the above conditions, and the role that exercise plays in treatment.

UK: Palestinian Sheikh Raed Salah To Be Kicked Out Of Britain

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

Radical preacher Raed Salah could be kicked out of the country within days after a court ruled he had no right to be in Britain. In a personal victory for Home Secretary Theresa May, an immigration tribunal found Salah was guilty of ‘fostering hatred’. His presence in the country could lead to ‘inter-community violence’, the tribunal found.

Salah, a self-styled Palestinian ‘sheikh’, was banned from entering Britain in June this year. But just days later, he waltzed through immigration controls at Heathrow.

After three days in which he was free to speak to supporters across the country, he was finally arrested and put in immigration detention. But he was released on bail while wearing an electronic tag.

He was accused in Parliament of ‘virulent anti-Semitism’ and in the past has claimed the Israeli government was responsible for the 9/11 attacks.

Mrs May said his presence here was not ‘conducive to the public good’ because of his extremist statements.

In its ruling, the tribunal made clear removing him was in the public interest and said he had engaged in ‘unacceptable behaviour’.

They said: ‘We are satisfied that the appellant’s words and actions tend to be inflammatory, divisive, insulting, and likely to foment tension and radicalism.’

Salah has several days to appeal to the High Court and then another 72 hours before he can be deported, so the earliest he could be on a plane is next Friday.

A Home Office spokesman said: ‘We will seek to deport him at the earliest opportunity.’

Grapel Deal Underway – Ilan In Israeli Hands

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

Israel has handed over 25 Egyptian nationals imprisoned in Israel as part of the Ilan Grapel prisoner exchange deal. Grapel is still in Egypt, in Israeli hands, currently with MK Yoel Hasson and attorney Yitzchak Molcho, the prime minister’s personal emissary.

Foreign media reports earlier today, Thursday, 29 Tishrei, indicated that Grapel’s mother, a New Yorker, traveled to Cairo ahead of the prisoner exchange to be with her son, who has been in Egyptian custody since June.

Grapel, a member of the radical left-wing, holds American and Israeli citizenship. He was raised in New York City, and made the decision to come to Israel and serve in the IDF. He was a member of the paratroop corps and fought in the Second Lebanon War, during which he was wounded in a hand and shoulder.

According to his Wikipedia bio, “Ilan Grapel is a dual US-Israeli citizen, originally from Queens, New York. In 2005, Grapel graduated from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland with a bachelor’s degree in international studies. He then moved to Israel and performed compulsory military service in Israel. During his service he was wounded in the 2006 Lebanon War. Grapel later returned to US for law school, enrolling in Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. His mother, Irene, said her son “always wanted to do good for the world.” As part of this commitment, she said, he learned Arabic at Johns Hopkins and went to Egypt to help in the re-settlement of people from Arab countries who were displaced. She added, “Ilan is a young man who wanted to see all sides of every issue. In the summer of 2002, Grapel interned in the Queens office of Democratic Congressman Gary Ackerman, who has lobbied for his release.

Baruch Hashem, he is now a free man, unfortunately at great cost to Israel, both in the release of prisoners to Egypt and military armament that will be sold to Egypt by the USA, part of the deal, further shifting the balance of power in the Mideast, not in Israel’s favor.

More than a few Israelis are angered over yet another prisoner release deal, telling Israel Radio that he was arrested and charged with being a Mossad agent because he deiced to get involved in Egyptian politics, due to his leftist agenda. They feel Israel should not have been involved in the affair and left if for the US Department of State.

Others feel that he is a citizen, one who fought in the IDF, and therefore, obligated the government to act on his behalf.

Occupy Wall Street Protesters In NYC Proclaim Solidarity With Demonstrators In Oakland

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

Protesters stormed through downtown Manhattan on Wednesday night to proclaim solidarity with fellow demonstrators who were forced out of encampments in Oakland, Calif., and Atlanta, Ga.

The drama unfolded when about 400 Occupy Wall Street protesters marched from Zuccotti Park to City Hall only to be met by a swarm of cops about 9 p.m.

The crowd quickly rerouted and began walking up Broadway towards Union Square only to be met by a police barricade near Reade St.

As organizers tried in vain to call off the march, scores of demonstrators splintered off and broke through a wall of cops – some of them even swiping a roll of orange netting used to kettle the large crowd.

“We wanted to go to City Hall to show solidarity with Oakland,” said Katama Rose, 22. “We wanted to come out and talk about how that wasn’t okay.”

But when protesters were held at bay by cops, “that’s when everything broke loose,” Rose said.

At least 10 people were arrested as the wild mob took to the streets towards Union Square chanting, “Oakland to NYC, stop police brutality.”

The group clogged traffic for several blocks in Soho and Greenwich Village after some urged fellow protesters to disobey police orders to stay on the sidewalks.

“We were blocking traffic, linked arm to arm,” said Patrick Bruner, 23.

Andy Davenport, 26, encouraged protesters to ignore police “because it’s in direct contradiction to the law,” he said. “This is how you fight the police state.”

The protesters dispersed once they made it to Union Square about 11 p.m. and many took the subway back to Zuccotti Park, where tensions had died down considerably.

The demonstrators were rallying for support after hundreds of protesters were pushed out of their encampment near the Oakland city hall by an army of cops and tear gas.

Several people were injured during the clash, including Iraq War veteran Scott Olsen, who suffered a cracked skull in the chaos.

The 24-year-old Marine was in critical condition after he was struck by an unknown object. It was not clear who threw the object, but Oakland Police Chief Howard Jordan said the incident would be probed as vigorously as a fatal police shooting, the Associated Press reported.

Police Investigate Swastika Scrawled On Jewish Judge’s Campaign Sign

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

Justice Ilan Gilbert told the Journal News that he made the discovery after a candidates’ forum on Monday.

Gilbert, who is Jewish, said he placed the posters in the lobby of the Yorktown Stage, which was hosting the forum.

Police believe the vandalism occurred between 6:45 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Yorktown police Lt. Kevin Soravilla said investigators are looking into the incident.

Egypt Cashing In On Grapel Prisoner Exchange Deal

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

A number of hours before the Ilan Grapel prisoner exchange deal between Israel and Egypt, the PA (Palestinian Authority) Maan news agency published additional details of the deal, which will significantly benefit the new Egyptian regime.

The United States will be giving Egypt F-16 fighter planes as part of the deal, ironically now, after the fall of President Hosni Mubarak. Despite maintaining good relations with the White House, Mubarak’s request for the fighter planes was rejected. It appears Egyptian and American officials met during recent days, during which time they finalized the final details of the deal.

Egyptian media reports over recent days hinted at additional perks from the Americans to the Egyptians for the release of Grapel, who maintains both Israeli and American citizenship.

Back in Israel, the Supreme Court on Wednesday, 28 Tishrei, rejected petitions from terror victims to block the deal, an expected decision. Many are angered over the release of 25 prisoners for Grapel, explaining that while he was a paratrooper, and he was wounded in the Second Lebanon War, he was arrested in Egypt due to his behavior connected to his radical left-wing political philosophy, and that is what got him in trouble.

Some Israelis feel that Israel should not have become involved and Jerusalem should have permitted the United States to deal with the Egyptians exclusively, but this was not the case.

In another prisoner-related matter, media reports in Israel continue to speculate that the next item on the prisoner exchange agenda is America’s release of Jonathan Pollard. Pollard activists are not too quick to become optimistic, having experienced similar periods in the past, as was the case during the Clinton administration in the White House, when everyone was certain that then PM Binyamin Netanyahu was bringing Pollard home, but sadly, this did not occur.

No Injuries in Gush Etzion Bomb Attack On Wednesday

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

An IDF vehicle on routine patrol in the Gush Etzion region on Wednesday evening, 28 Tishrei, detonated a roadside explosive device. Baruch Hashem there were no injuries. The armored vehicle did its job, protecting the soldiers inside.

Right-wing politicians are calling on the government to begin responding appropriately, pointing out that of late, there has been a steady increase in terror incidents throughout Yehuda and Shomron while the government and military continue turning a blind eye.

Madoff Says He Feels Happier Now Than He’s Felt In 20 Years

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

Bernie Madoff and his wife may have attempted suicide after he admitted stealing billions the largest Ponzi scheme in history, but now the disgraced financier says he feels happier in prison than he’s felt in 20 years.

Barbara Walters told ABC’s “Good Morning America” on Thursday that she interviewed Madoff for two hours at the prison in Butner, N.C., where he’s serving a 150-year sentence. No cameras were allowed in the prison.

According to Walters, Madoff says he has terrible remorse and horrible nightmares over his epic fraud, but feels “safer here (in prison) than outside. I have people to talk to, no decisions to make. I know I will die in prison. I lived the last 20 years of my life in fear. Now, I have no fear because I’m no longer in control.”

The comments come after wife Ruth revealed in a “60 Minutes” interview that the couple tried to kill themselves after the billion-dollar fraud scheme came to light.

“I don’t know whose idea it was, but we decided to kill ourselves because it was so horrendous what was happening,” Ruth Madoff tells Morley Safer. “We had terrible phone calls. Hate mail, just beyond anything and I said ‘I just can’t go on anymore.’”

“We took pills and woke up the next day….It was very impulsive and I am glad we woke up,” she said.

Walters also said he told her he understands why his one-time clients hate him, and that the average person thinks he “robbed widows and orphans.” But he also told her, “I made wealthy people wealthier.”

Madoff was arrested on Dec. 11, 2008, the morning after his sons notified authorities through an attorney that he had confessed to them that his investment business was a multibillion-dollar Ponzi scheme. He admitted cheating thousands of investors. He pleaded guilty to fraud charges.

Chareidim Rally At Kikar Shabbos To Wipe Out Chareidi Violence

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

Hundreds of members of the Meah Shearim community and supporters protested at Kikar Shabbos on Wednesday, decrying the recent violence that has plagued the community.

The protest was against the violence seen in Meah Shearim and Geula over recent weeks, which culminated in the violent beating of a Meah Shearim resident by a group of chassidim a night earlier. The victim of that beating remains in Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital.

Participants in the event had harsh words for Gerrer Chassidim, accusing them of trying to take over their community.

Mrs. Miriam Hirschman, the wife of the victim of the beating in Geula, told Kikar Shabbat on Wednesday night that she received a telephone threat saying “we are going to kill you”.

Rav Uri Sofer of Bnei Brak called to halt the violence, warning of what may emerge from this behavior, chas v’sholom “to kill one another…leading to an intifada”.

Rabbi Tzvi Bialistotzky from Bnei Brak did not make an effort to hide his delight, unwilling to condemn the beating attack. He explained that when a man whose store and home are attacked decides to defend himself, it is not called terror. He is responding appropriately so it is not terror. Actually, he called the attack “a relatively moderate response”, adding they cannot continue to strike out and not expect a retaliatory move.

Joining in was Zaka founder and director Yehuda Meshi-Zahav, who commented “that is the only language the sikrikim understand. These are people for whom violence is a way of life. Finally, someone is speaking to them in their own language”. He added that many who have a score to settle with Gur are trying to take advantage of the situation but in actuality, Gur was correct in this case.

Katyusha Rockets Fired Into Israel

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

Sirens were heard in many southern cities in Israel Wednesday night close to midnight as Katyusha rockets fired from Gaza were detected. One of the three rockets impacted between Ashdod and Gadera. Sirens were heard in along the southern communities bordering Gaza, as well as Ashdod, Ashkelon, Rechovot, Be’er Yaakov, Nes Tziona, Gan Yavne, Be’er Tuvia Rishon L’Tzion and other municipalities.

Security officials have noticed more advanced rockets used in attacks from Gaza, leading to the theory that Russian-built rockets were looted from Libya weapons storage warehouses and smuggled into Gaza. According to a report in the daily Haaretz, Israel is becoming increasingly concerned because such a reality will mark the end of IAF aircraft operating over Gaza without concern, as well as the realization that terrorists can now fire at civilian aircraft in the Eilat area.

It appear these concerns have also alerted US State Department officials, with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announcing millions of dollars of aid will be given to the new government in Libya  towards combating weapons smuggling that is widespread in that country.

Squash & Peanut Butter Soup

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

Peanut butter? Yes, it adds just enough extra flavor to make this soup special. My friend made it for first days and said everyone was raving about it.

4 cups vegetable stock
1 butternut squash, peeled, and cut into 2-inch pieces
1 large tart apple, cored, peeled and sliced
1 large onion, quartered
½ cup peanut butter
2 teaspoons curry powder
½ teaspoon salt ( optional if peanut butter is salted )
¼ teaspoon pepper
¾ cup nondairy creamer
3 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped, for garnish

Bring the stock to a boil in a large pan. Add squash, apple and onion. Reduce heat and simmer until vegetables are tender, about 20 minutes. Stir in peanut butter and spices.
Puree the mixture in batches in a blender or food processor until smooth.
Return to the pot and stir in the nondairy creamer. Add more if necessary to archive desired consistency. Garnish with chopped parsley.

DA To Review Old Arrests, Cases By Accused NYPD Officers

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

The Brooklyn district attorney is planning to review old arrests made by the eight NYPD officers who were arrested Tuesday on charges of smuggling weapons and illegal goods.

The DA’s office will comb through any cases that involved the officers, who were all charged in federal court with multiple conspiracy counts.

The officers arrested include five active-duty officers assigned to Brooklyn and three retired NYPD officers, although two of the retired officers were active when committing the alleged crimes, prosecutors said.

Most of the officers worked out of the 68th Precinct, which serves the Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights and Fort Hamilton neighborhoods.

According to the criminal complaint, some of those arrested smuggled 20 firearms as recently as Sept. 22. The cache included three M-16 rifles, one shotgun and 16 handguns, most of which had their serial numbers removed.

One officer bragged to an informant in July, as an associate displayed a shotgun for sale, that it was a “sample” and that they could get anything “from A to Z.”

Several of those arrested are also accused of illegally transporting other stolen goods. The group is accused of transporting stolen slot machines from Atlantic City, N.J., to Port Chester, N.Y., in March. Two months later, they allegedly stole more than 200 cases of cigarettes from trucks in Virginia and hauled them to New York.

Fox News Poll: GOP Primary Voters Get On The Cain Train

Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

Herman Cain takes the lead in the Republican presidential nomination contest as GOP voters continue to deny Mitt Romney clear front-runner status.

A Fox News poll released Wednesday shows support for Cain has quadrupled among GOP primary voters since late August. At that time, he stood at 6 percent. After three September debates, he jumped to 17 percent. And now Cain leads the pack at 24 percent.

While it’s the first time Romney has trailed Cain, it’s the second time he’s been ousted from the lead since July. Romney receives 20 percent — a new low for him. That’s down from 23 percent last month and a high of 26 percent in early August.

Newt Gingrich now comes in third with 12 percent — edging out Rick Perry. The former speaker — like Cain — has seen his support quadruple since late August.

Perry’s support has dropped to 10 percent, down from 19 percent in September. After his mid-August announcement, Perry captured 29 percent of the vote and took the front-runner role from Romney.

At 9 percent, Ron Paul stays in the top five.

The 53 Percent: We Are NOT ‘Occupy Wall Street’

Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

Occupy Wall Street protesters might say they represent 99% of the nation, but there’s a growing number of Americans who are making it clear they are not part of the dissident crowd.

They call themselves the 53%…as in the 53% of Americans who pay federal income taxes. And they are making their voices heard on Tumblr blogs, Twitter and Facebook pages devoted to stories of personal responsibility and work ethic.

The number originates in the estimate that roughly 47% of Americans don’t pay federal income tax, according to the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center. The 53 percenters stress the fact that they are paying the taxes that support the government assistance the protesters say they want.

Kevin Eder was among the first to galvanize those who wanted to differentiate themselves from the thousands of people rallying across the nation to raise awareness of the growing economic gap between the rich and everyone else.

In early October, Eder created the Twitter hashtag #iamthe53, which has since been posted in hundreds of tweets as the backlash to Occupy Wall Street mounts.

“I would never identify myself with those occupying Wall Street,” said Eder, 26, a business analyst in Washington D.C. “The frustration was born out of people claiming to speak for me who don’t.”

Many of those tweeting share the belief that the protesters need to stop complaining about the government and financial institutions and start looking for work. Ken Gardner, an attorney in Dallas, joined the conversation because he opposes government handouts.

“We don’t want to be the 53% who carries the 47% on our shoulders,” said Gardner, who thinks more people should pay federal income taxes.
