Cyberattack Targets Federal Employee Data

Monday, May 28th, 2012

The personal information of more than 123,000 participants in a retirement savings program for federal employees was accessed in a sophisticated cyberattack that happened last July, the Federal Retirement Thrift Investment Board announced on Friday.

The attack was targeted at a computer belonging to Serco, a firm that provides services to the Thrift Savings Plan. The FBI informed Serco and the FRTIB of the hacking incident in April.

The names, addresses and Social Security numbers of around 43,000 people were accessed, according to the Thrift Savings Plan website. The Social Security numbers and other information belonging to about 80,000 other people — but not their names — were also accessed.

On its website, the Thrift Savings Program said it “does not have any evidence that any personal information has been used or is being misused or disclosed to other persons.”

“We sincerely regret that this event occurred,” said Greg Long, executive director of the FRTIB in a statement, “and we will provide assistance and support to the affected individuals through a call center and credit monitoring. We are working with Serco and other security experts to ensure that TSP data is protected and secure. We are proud of our service to our participants and beneficiaries and want to continue to earn their trust.”

The FRTIB said it took immediate steps with Serco to address the attack. They immediately shut down the compromised computer and formed a response team to carry out a systemwide review of all computer security procedures.

Employee At Satmar Colony Killed By Golf-Cart on Friday Night

Monday, May 28th, 2012

On Friday May 25, 2012, at approximately 11:40 PM, Sullivan County Sheriff’s Deputies were called to a report of a fatal accident at the Ichud Bungalow Colony (formerly Ideal Bungalows) on State Route 42 South in the Town of Thompson.

At the scene deputies found a man pinned under a golf cart that had rolled over.

The victim, identified as Carlos Merino Santiago, 21, of Brooklyn, was pronounced dead at the scene by Sullivan County Coroner Elton Harris.

The preliminary investigation indicates that Santiago may have been doing “donuts” and perfoming other manuevers with the golf cart just prior to it overturning.

His lifless body was discovered by a co-worker who called 911.

Sheriff’s Detectives believe Santiago may have been under the golf cart for some time prior to being found.

Santiago, who is originally from Saint Pedro Jicayan, Mexico, was part of a maintenance team that was preparing the bungalow colony for its opening in a few weeks.

Detectives believe alcohol may have been a factor in this accident.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by the Monticello Fire Dept. and Monticello Police.

Number of the Week: Half of U.S. Lives in Household Getting Benefits

Monday, May 28th, 2012

49.1%: Percent of the population that lives in a household where at least one member received some type of government benefit in the first quarter of 2011.

Cutting government spending is no easy task, and it’s made more complicated by recent Census Bureau data showing that nearly half of the people in the U.S. live in a household that receives at least one government benefit, and many likely received more than one.

The 49.1% of the population in a household that gets benefits is up from 30% in the early 1980s and 44.4% as recently as the third quarter of 2008.

The increase in recent years is likely due in large part to the lingering effects of the recession. As of early 2011, 15% of people lived in a household that received food stamps, 26% had someone enrolled in Medicaid and 2% had a member receiving unemployment benefits. Families doubling up to save money or pool expenses also is likely leading to more multigenerational households. But even without the effects of the recession, there would be a larger reliance on government.

The Census data show that 16% of the population lives in a household where at least one member receives Social Security and 15% receive or live with someone who gets Medicare. There is likely a lot of overlap, since Social Security and Medicare tend to go hand in hand, but those percentages also are likely to increase as the Baby Boom generation ages.

With increased government spending comes the need to pay for it, and if taxes aren’t going to increase that means deficits. Nearly three-quarters of Americans blame the U.S. budget deficit on spending too much money on federal programs, according to a Gallup poll last year, but when the conversation turns to which programs to cut, the majorities are harder to find. For example, 56% of respondents oppose making significant changes to Social Security or Medicare.

The more people who receive benefits, the harder it’s going to be to make cuts, and it’s never popular to raise taxes. In some respects that argues for letting a combination of tax increases and spending cuts that is set to automatically hit in 2013 take effect. There’s just one problem: the Congressional Budget Office says it would sink the economy into recession.

Panetta: U.S. is Ready to Stop Iran from Creating Nuclear Weapons

Monday, May 28th, 2012

U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta on Sunday indirectly confirmed recent remarks by the Ambassador to Israel that the U.S. is “ready from a military perspective’’ to stop Iran from making a nuclear weapon if international pressure fails.

The U.S. and members of the United Nations Security Council recently met in Baghdad for talks about Iran’s suspected nuclear weapon program. Iran denies it has military intentions but has called for the destruction of Israel.

“We have plans to be able to implement any contingency we have to in order to defend ourselves,’’ Panetta said on ABC’s This Week. Earlier, Panetta said, “The fundamental premise is that neither the United States or the international community is going to allow Iran to develop a nuclear weapon.’’

Panetta defended the U.S. military’s use of drones to kill terrorists, resulting in some civilian casualties, calling them “one of the most precise weapons that we have in our arsenal.’’

He also insisted that the administration did not share any “inappropriate’’ details with filmmakers making a movie about Osama bin Laden, despite criticism from members of Congress.

Panetta also condemned Pakistan for sentencing a doctor to prison for helping the U.S. hunt down terrorist leader Osama bin Laden.

Security Council Condemns Syrian Massacre of Adults and Children

Monday, May 28th, 2012

The United Nations Security Council voted unanimously to condemn the latest Syrian government’s massacre of innocent civilians, at least 108 people including children in Houla. As in previous cases, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and other state officials deny government troops massacred anyone, insisting they do not massacre civilians. State officials explained that such an act is a violation of international law and they would have no part in such activities.

In his letter, UN Director-General Bank ki-Moon stated the dead bodies were seen and the evidence confirmed that artillery fire was directed at the victims. He added that the rebel forces do not have artillery shells in their armory.

Israeli Forces Prepare for Possible Conflict with Syria

Monday, May 28th, 2012

As it becomes increasingly apparent that the regime of Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad is nearing its final days, intelligence and military experts are preparing for the worst case scenario. One of the major concerns in Jerusalem is who will be in power and what will happen with Syria’s chemical weapons.

As such, reservists have been called up and they are practicing addressing various scenarios, including a chemical weapons attack, missiles launched into Israel with chemical warheads. This is just one of the possible scenarios that are being rehearsed as officials in Jerusalem continue to carefully monitor events in Damascus during what most believe are the final days of the al-Assad rule.

Shock at Hadassah Following Petira of Senior Physician

Monday, May 28th, 2012

Doctors at Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital last week were shocked to hear of the death of a colleague, a young one at that, not to mention the circumstances surrounding his death. His petira was the second in pediatric medicine in recent months.

Dr. Eitan Gross, head of the Pediatric Oncological Surgery was only 58 at the time of his death. The senior physician complained of not “feeling himself” and he went to his office to lay down for a bit on Thursday, 3 Sivan 5772. His lifeless body was found in the office later in the day. It appears that he sustained a massive myocardial infarction and was unable to summon assistance. CPR and advanced life support was implemented but it was soon realized that the life saving efforts were too late.

Gross z”l was known as a senior pediatrician in Israel, known for his research and a number of pioneering treatments. His petira marks the second senior pediatrician to die in the hospital in recent months. A number of months ago, Dr. Ido Yatziv who headed the Pediatric ICU was niftar at the age of 57.

Dr. Gross’ levaya was held on erev Shabbos in the Professors’ section in Givat Shaul with colleagues pointing out the two senior physicians were good friends both in and out of the workplace.

Rav Metzger: When There is Less Torah Study More Soldiers Fall in Battle

Monday, May 28th, 2012

Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi Yonah Metzger is under fire for simply telling it as it is. In an address last week the rav stated that more soldiers were killed during the Yom Kippur War of 1973 because there were less people learning torah.

The rav was speaking at the ceremony taking place in Yerushalayim on behalf of his son-in-law, Rabbi Shimshon Klein, who has been appointed as the new rav of the air force’s chareidi Shachar program.

Rabbi Metzger told the audience “When Am Yisrael sits and studies torah in yeshivos, this gives us strength. On the weaker days, such as erev shabbos and erev yomtov, when the population in the batei medrashim is down, we see there are more injuries and more fatalities”.

Military officials present at the event stated the rav should not have made such remarks which they felt were not viewed as acceptable by IDF commanders and may actually be viewed as insulting or worse by bereaved family members.

Metzger added the abolition of the Tal Law by the High Court of Justice and the ongoing efforts to replace the law must be accompanied by a realization of the contribution made by those studying torah as an integral part of the defense of the nation.”We are facing a difficult period and there are many branches of the military. I believe that just like there is a tank corps, paratroopers, there must also be Hashem’s Corps that defends us”.

Officials on the rav’s staff responded to the criticism by explaining there was nothing new stated by the rav in his address and that Chazal have told us that torah study protects and saves us.

There has been some criticism over the appointment due to the fact that Rabbi Klein is affiliated with the dati leumi tzibur and the Shachar program is uniquely designed for chareidim.

8 Sifrei Torah Destroyed in Shul Fire in Eretz Yisrael

Sunday, May 27th, 2012

Eight sifrei torah were destroyed in a blaze that erupted in the Eitz Chaim Shul on Shai Street in Kiryat Ono on Shabbos at 18:00. The shul serves mispallalim who maintain their nusach from Turkey.

Mispallalim from a neighboring shul who were attending a shiur when they realized the fire broke out and summoned firefighters but despite their best efforts, they were unsuccessful in saving the sifrei torah. The fire simply spread to the aaron kodesh and the seforim were engulfed in the flames.

The sifrei torah from the neighboring shul were removed as firefighters feared the blaze would spread as it was burning out of control. Area residents were also evacuated from their homes and hazardous materials experts were summoned due to the large quantity of asbestos involved in the fire.

Bnei Brak fire official Chezi Tzefanya explained that his men first ran to save the sifrei torah, but it was simply impossible as the aaron kodesh was engulfed in flames.

In another shul blaze, in a shul on HaRif Street in Elad, firefighters succeeded in removing two sifrei torah from the aaron kodesh. The shul is in a caravan home which was totally destroyed, along with seforim but the sifrei torah were saved.

Fire marshals are inspecting both fires as to determine the cause.

Rabbi Krakowski: Parshas Bamidbar

Friday, May 25th, 2012

This week’s Sedra opens a new Sefer in Chumash. The Sedra and Sefer seem to have a relatively dry opening. The Sedra starts by allocating 50 Pesukim on counting Am-Yisroel. The Torah goes through each and every Shevet and tells us the precise number of men in each one. Following the lengthy description of the counting of Am-Yisroel Hashem instructs Moshe Rabeinu that each individual in Klal-Yisroel must camp around the Mishkan in the area where their Shevet’s banner is displayed.

The census of Klal-Yisroel has been and continues to be the focus of much discussion. There are indeed many peculiar aspects to the counting of Am-Yisroel. But why is it that the Torah chooses to start Sefer Bamidbar with the idea of Klal-Yisroel’s being counted? Furthermore what is the significance of Hashem’s command to Klal-Yisroel that everybody must camp in their exact appropriate spot?

Regardless as to why Hashem counted Klal-Yisroel so many times and regardless how Hashem chose to count Am-Yisroel one thing is inherently clear: when you count a group of individuals you are both singling out each individual as a number, and you are as well grouping them all together as a total sum.

When Hashem counted Am-Yisroel Hashem was in essence telling each of the Bnei-Yisroel that they have a unique place among Klal-Yisroel, and that He values their place.

Items of little value or importance generally are neglected and therefore are often misplaced and even totally disregarded. Objects of value, however, are carefully placed. A collector will often have a display case for his collection. In this display case, each and every item will have its special spot so as to draw attention to it and enhance its impact.

Each and every individual of Am-Yisroel is special to Hashem. Hashem cherishes each and every one of us. Hashem places each and every one of us in our special place in this world in order that each one of us can best shine. We must try to understand why we are where we are, and how where we are is meant to best make us shine.

A very warm Good Shabbos, Rabbi Y. Dov Krakowski

Muslim Soldier Guilty In Plot To Blow Up Texas Restaurant Full Of Fort Hood Troops

Friday, May 25th, 2012

A federal jury on Thursday convicted a Muslim soldier on six charges in connection with a failed plot to blow up a Texas restaurant full of Fort Hood troops, his religious mission to get “justice” for the people of Iraq and Afghanistan.

Jurors in U.S. District Court in Waco deliberated a little more than an hour before finding Pfc. Naser Jason Abdo guilty of attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction, attempted murder of U.S. officers or employees, and four counts of possessing a weapon in furtherance of a federal crime of violence.

Abdo, 22, did not stand with his attorneys when jurors and the judge entered the room, and he showed no emotion when each of the six guilty verdicts was read by the court clerk. Abdo, who’s been accused of spitting blood on authorities escorting him and a jailer, wore a mask covering his nose and mouth throughout the trial.

He faces up to life in prison. U.S. District Judge Walter Smith is set to sentence Abdo in July.

Prosecutors said Abdo had already started making a bomb when he was detained at a Killeen motel last July after going AWOL from Fort Campbell, Ky. Authorities also found numerous bomb-making components, a loaded gun, 143 rounds of ammunition, a stun gun and other items in his backpack and motel room.

In a recorded police interview, Abdo said he was planning to pull off an attack in the Fort Hood area “because I don’t appreciate what my unit did in Afghanistan.”

Suspect in Patz Case Is Taken to Bellevue; Placed On Suicide Watch

Friday, May 25th, 2012

Pedro Hernandez, the former bodega worker arrested on Thursday and accused of killing Etan Patz in 1979, was held overnight Thursday under a suicide watch and transferred to Bellevue Hospital Center early Friday morning, an official briefed on the matter said.

Mr. Hernandez, 51, was taken into custody on Wednesday and held Thursday night under close monitoring, the official said.

He was under the constant observation of a police sergeant until 5:30 a.m., when he was transferred to Bellevue, the official said.

It was unclear where Mr. Hernandez was held until he was moved to the hospital, and the official could not say whether he was transferred for any formal evaluation. Mr. Hernandez has been accused of second-degree murder by the police but has yet to be charged by prosecutors.

He told investigators that on the day Etan, 6, disappeared on his way to a school bus stop in SoHo, he lured the boy to the basement of the bodega where he worked with the promise of a soda, Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly said Thursday night. Once inside, Mr. Hernandez said he choked Etan, stuffed his body in a bag and took the bag about a block and a half away, where dumped it in the open amid other trash.

Etan disappeared 33 years ago on Friday.

Arabic Mandatory At NYC Public School

Friday, May 25th, 2012

An upper Manhattan public elementary school will be the first in the city to require that students study Arabic, officials said yesterday.

Beginning next semester, all 200 second- through fifth-graders at PS 368 in Hamilton Heights will be taught the language twice a week for 45 minutes — putting it on equal footing with science and music courses.

One reason Principal Nicky Kram Rosen selected Arabic — as opposed to more common offerings, such as Spanish or French — is because it will help the school obtain a prestigious International Baccalaureate standing.

“Arabic has been identified as a critical-need language,” she said, citing students’ future “career trajectories.”

Ocean County Fire Marshal’s Office Warns Of Carbon Monoxide Dangers Ahead Of Shavuos

Friday, May 25th, 2012

The following is via TLS:

The Office of the Ocean County Fire Marshal would like to wish everyone a safe Shavuot. Since Shavuot this year begins after Shabbos, we’d like to offer some fire safety tips for the long holiday. One of the most important issues are stoves and ovens being left “On” causing a potential buildup of Carbon Monoxide in your residence. Carbon Monoxide (CO) is an odorless, colorless and potentially deadly gas causing headaches, dizziness, redness in the face, nausea, and flu like symptoms. Remember, Carbon Monoxide (CO) poisonings can happen at anytime of the year due to a fuel-burning appliance not working or operating properly or improper ventilation for those appliance(s).

Because of those dangers, we along with the Orthodox Union’s Safe Homes, Shuls, and Schools Initiative issue warnings before holidays or occasions when the use of fire or cooking is part of the tradition. The risk of CO poisoning is an area of concern, due to several incidents in the last several years, here in NJ and around the country sending families and their friends to the hospital for CO poisoning. We urge families to replace their Smoke/Carbon Monoxide alarm batteries prior to the holidays and provide some guidelines for carbon monoxide safety:

• All homes must have working CO detectors. We recommend electric plug in models with a display and battery backup or a combination Smoke/Carbon Monoxide battery operated ones. A basic unit is adequate however. We recommend at least one on each level.

• IMMEDIATELY CALL THE FIRE DEPARTMENT OR 911 IF YOUR SMOKE/CO ALARM GOES OFF! The fire department will respond quickly to check homes with their multi-gas meters and help in the removal of the CO.

• Your house should have the hood above your stove vented to the outside. A hood that vents back into the kitchen will not help reduce CO.

• An alternative to the stove is an electric hot plate with a timer to shut it on and off and be UL listed, which has no flame, so does not produce CO.

• A UL listed electric crock pot is another alternative, which is insulated and reduces the chance of someone burning themselves.

• You should have a one-foot non-combustible area around the stove and crock-pot.

• NEVER use an extension cord with these devices! They require too many amps and could cause a fire. The above devices should be plugged directly into an outlet.

• If you must operate a stove, leave a window open near the stove at least approximately 4 inches, and have a second window open at the opposite side of the house. This will allow some cross ventilation and a supply of fresh air.

• An electric stove with a warming drawer is another solution. This would keep food warm without generating CO.

• A future solution would be an electric stove that would turn on and off during the Sabbath and holidays as needed. The community is always looking for manufacturers who are willing to work with us.

Bathroom exhaust fans – Our office has seen many bathroom ceiling exhaust fan fires in the last several years. The fans are designed for use when the bathroom is in use. We understand they are left on for Shabbos for 24 hours or longer on holidays. Since that is the case we ask that you check them periodically for lint and dirt buildup and make sure they are working properly to prevent them from overheating due to their extended usage.

Vertluch: Shavuos 5772

Friday, May 25th, 2012

We all know that on Shavous there’s a minhag to eat milchigs; although many meforshim offer various explanations, the Yeshuos Yaakov offers a fascinating explanation which I would like to share with you. Even prior to matan Torah the bnei Yisroel were performing the commandments of Hashem, as we’ve learnt from Chazal that the Avos performed mitzvos on their own. But once we-as a nation-were commanded to do them, it became more difficult. Once we were a mitzuveh v’oseh (commanded to do something) then the yetzer hara fights us harder not to do it.

The Alter from Kelm once said ‘there are many shadchanim. Some are good, some are bad, and some are even terrible. But even the worst shadchan in the world wouldn’t redd an animal to a person.’ The Ribono Shel Olam goes ahead and takes a spiritual neshomah and partners it up with a physical guf (body). How does that work? How can they possibly survive when they’re extreme opposites?

The answer is the foundation of Shavous. Every person is composed of two elements. Our goal is to make our spiritual being dominate the physical being. The gemara in Pesachim (68) says that Rav Yosef said if not for this day of matan Torah ‘kama ika Yosef b’shuka’, how many regular Josephs would there be in the marketplace? I would not have been any greater than anyone else out there. The obvious question is-where was the humility? Reb Yosef was known to be of the humblest of people. How can he say that he wouldn’t have reached such massive heights in Torah if not for this day? That seems not to sound too humble?

Yeshuas Yaakov says, that in reality the opposite is true. Reb Yosef said what he said because of his humility. Being he was blind he was exempt from all the mitzvos. He wasn’t included in the commanding of performing the mitzvos and therefore, the yetzer hara didn’t challenge him as much. Had the Torah not been given to klal Yisroel everyone else would’ve also been exempt from the Torah and its mitzvos and it would have been just as easy for them to perform the mitzvos- just like it is for me (with no yetzer hara challenging you).

The gemara in niddah (9a) asks-why is it that when a lady has a baby she doesn’t produce a flow of blood for the next twenty four months. Reb Meir answers that instead of a flow of blood, her body produces milk with which she can nurse with. The gemara asks, how does Reb Meir know this to be true? The answer given is that he learnt it from a pasuk. The pasuk says ‘who is the one that is able to extract a tahar (pure) thing from a tameh (contaminated) thing’. Reb Meir is learning that it’s referring to the blood that makes her tameh (contaminated) into that which is tahar (pure); milk. So he understands it to mean that Hashem makes this happen.

Says the Yeshuas Yaakov-what is the ultimate representation of transforming something tamei into something tahar? Milk! With this we understand why we eat milk products on Shavous. Just like Hashem transforms a tamei to a tahur the same is true by us Yidden. We have to take something that is tamei (ourselves) and transform it into something tahar. How do we accomplish this? The answer is through Torah. We eat milk because that represents this transformation. On Shavous we were given the Torah and through Torah we have the ability to transform a davar gashmi into a davar ruchni.

The Chofetz Chaim, in his introduction to his sefer likutei halachos-writes that the reason why honey is comparable to Torah is because if you drop a piece of bread into honey and it sits there for a while it will turn into honey. The same is true by Torah. If you indulge in it and sit with it (in it), eventually it will become part of you.

It’s up to each and every one of us to make the best out of the Yom Tov and to be able to transform ourselves through Torah and help create harmony between our neshoma and our physical body.

As we bring in the Yom Tov and we sit down to a milchige seuda let us not forget what it represents and it will hopefully enable us to elevate ourselves to a level where we will be worthy of receiving the ultimate geulah.

HAVE A GREAT & MEANINGFUL YOM TOV
