PHOTOS: MVA Involving New NYPD Nissan Altima On Belt Pkwy & 65th Street

(Sunday, January 24th, 2010)

[PHOTO LINK BELOW] At approximately 4:00AM EST Sunday morning an NYPD cruiser was involved in a serious MVA at the Belt parkway and 65th Street. The MVA involved a new Nissan Altima (RMP) from the 68th Precinct. Two officers were removed to Lutheran Trauma Center and reported to be in stable condition.

The NYPD recently began a pilot program with adding Nissan Altima Hybrids to the NYPD fleet of cruisers.

If these cars work out well as police units, plenty of fuel will be saved. The current fleet, which consists mainly of large, rear-wheel drive, full frame Crown Vics and slightly smaller Impalas, averages between 16 and 18 mpg in the city. The Altimas are expected to get 35 mpg.
