Israel: Bill To Expose Bloggers Posting Slander

(Monday, November 28th, 2011)

Jerusalem – The Knesset plenum on Monday passed in its first reading a bill stipulating that the court can instruct an internet provider to reveal the identity of a talkback author (blogger / commenter) whose message contained slander.

The bill, initiated by MK Zevulun Orlev (Habayit Hayehudi), aims to help those who have been victimized by anonymous talkbacks to file lawsuits against its authors.

It won’t work unless either: 1) it is done by treaty with a great many countries willing to adopt a similar policy; 2) Israel is will to cut off its internet from foreign materials similar to what Iran and North Korea try to do.

There is no way Israel can make such a law enforceable on servers located in other countries.
