MK Maklev: They Have It In For The Chareidi Children

The Knesset Committee for Distributive Justice & Social Equality on Wednesday, 26 Cheshvan, discussed the inequality in the budgeting policy and wage conditions in the unofficial educational institutions after it was revealed that the institutions of the Ministry of Education are discriminated against by the Ministry of Education.

In the course of the hearing, MK Uri Maklev blamed the severe discrimination in funding institutions and said that “the approach must change, the institutions receive only forty percent, the root of the evil begins with missing budgeting, and this is punishment of children in non-official/recognized mosdos”.

“Parents do not send [their children] because they want more, but they are demands that come from a way of life and a certain hashkafa,” explained Maklev. “The schools meet all the physical and pedagogical requirements. No general school is required to be re-licensed every year. They spend much more than any other school.”

“The demands, such as teachers’ salaries, are full, while they are not taken into account,” said Maklev.

Maklev went on to say that “chareidi education was established before the establishment of the state in agreements with the Jewish Agency, which came from religious demands. Today, the demand is stronger as they are given to unofficial/recognized schools”.

At the end of his speech, Maklev said that “Shas and Yahadut Hatorah put a demand in the coalition agreement. We demand that this be implemented, that the coalition agreement be realized.”

As reported, the Knesset Research Center examined and found that there are gaps of tens of percent in the Ministry of Education’s investment in recognized/non-official schools in the chareidi sector and in the Arab sector.

The report, published for the first time in Ynet, shows that while the Education Ministry’s budget for a class in a state-religious school is 446,278 NIS, a chareidi class in an non-official official – not Chinuch Atzmai or the Shas educational system received 186,871 NIS, a gap of more than NIS 250,000.

  1. Charedi classes in non-official schools are not taught the Ministry of Education core curriculum. Everything has its trade offs. Without a doubt the Charedi sector should be free to set its own curriculum but you can’t have your cake and eat it!
