Rabbi Eliezer Berland ‘Reveals’ That Maran Rav Ovadia Yosef ‘Had Neshama Of Moshiach Ben Yosef’

berlRosh Yeshivas Shuvu Banim Rabbi Eliezer Berland Shlita gave a shiur earlier this week in Amsterdam [where he is currently staying after fleeing from authorities in Israel], which was transmitted by satellite to a number of areas.

The rav made mention of Maran HaGaon HaRav Ovadia Yosef ZT”L a number of times during the shiur, explaining the late Gadol Hador had the neshama of Moshiach Ben Yosef but the generation was unworthy. He quoted the Chassam Softer who explains that in each generation there is a tzaddik worthy to be Moshiach but the generation must be worthy.

The rav also spoke of the process of one coming back to a life of adherence of Torah and mitzvos. He addressed the teshuvah process and stated that today, too many have turned Breslov into some type of merriment and game, “a circus”, describing the dancing on tables and the like. Rav Berland stated this does not and never represented the true chassidus of those who follow the Torah of Rav Nachman ZY”A.

  1. I may not be (thankfully) as great a Kabbalist as “rabbi” berland, but my understanding of mashiach Ben yosef is that he would be a military leader, and not a religious one. For example, in Emunot veDeyot, RS”G says that Messiah ben Joseph will appear in the Upper Galilee prior to the coming of Messiah ben David; he will gather the children of Israel around him, march to Jerusalem, and there, after overcoming the hostile powers, reestablish Temple worship and set up his own dominion.
How is this what rav Ovadya Ztvk”l accomplished?
Just because a person has a long white beard, acts in bizarre “mystical” ways does not mean that he has the answers. חכמים הזהרו בדבריכם

  2. In the past, some people said that Rabbi Meyer Kahana, Z’L was Moshiach Ben Yosef. The fact that he was a Kohein never entered those people’s minds.

People say all kinds of things. There is supposed to be a potential Moshiach born to every generation. Speculating and making outrageous comments does no one any good.

In this case, the person has no credibility, except with his blind followers.

  3. Ive seen in a sefer from one of the previous gedolei hador that ben dovid means that one chelek of his neshama is from someone straight from dovid hamelech, but lav davka he himself needs to be a yisrael

  4. I don’t debate the claim BUT I do question the source. I realize he is innocent until proven otherwise but there are several serious allegations pending against him. Why quote him?

  5. this is not newsworthy. there is too much speculation about Rabbi Berland’s present status. and the Maran is revered enough without ridiculous titles.

  6. I have no opinion regarding Rav Berland because I am always cautious not to be mevaze even a safek talmid chacham and risk losing my chelek in Olam Haba over it. However, if you read carefully, all Rav Berland is saying is that he had the neshama, but the generation was unworthy. He also said that in every generation there is someone suited to be mashiach – an idea which is well known. Obviously, since we were not worthy, Maran did not die in battle, since there was no battle- our loss.

  7. Keep it simple and to the point, people: Torah and Mitzvot. If MBD comes while a person is learning and says to come rebuild the Temple, we keep learning; it’s that simple. We’re not looking for desperate answers, rather building a lifestyle of striving for Kedusha, that doesn’t change in the Times of the M.

We have to seek encouragement that makes the long-term struggle easier, not answers that help in the short-term.

Some good reading for those interested:

-Acharit Hayamim. In Hebrew, with a ton of haskamot from previous Gedolei HaDor.

-Kol HaTor. By Talmidei HaGra. Also Hebrew, but have seen some abridged translations. Outlines the 156 of MBY and pretty much makes a lot clear while expanding on what MBY is about.

  8. #1 Chacham Ovadia didnt die in battle because the generation was not worthy. Do people know how to read? Had we been worthy he WOULD HAVE been mashiach Ben Yosef
