Poll Shows Shas Drops to Seven Mandates

deriAnother election poll released by the Knesset Channel reveals yet another embarrassment for Shas leader Aryeh Deri as the party drops to seven seats. Preferring not to read the writing on the walls, Deri responds explaining that in internal polls, the party receives 11 seats. Deri’s number contradicts all polls carried out in recent months.

This poll was conducted by Professor Yitzchak Katz of Magar Mochot in the middle of last week involving 513 adult Israeli voters. It shoes that that drops from its current 11 seats to 7. The poll asked respondents to indicate which party they would vote for today. Likud headed by Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu receives 25 seats. Yisrael Beitenu headed by Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman receives 15 seats. Bayit Yehudi headed by Minister of the Economy Naftali Bennett receives 15 seats, up from 12 in the current Knesset.

Other results reveal Labor headed by MK Yitzchak Herzog receives 14 seats, down from 15 today. Yesh Atid headed by Finance Minister Yair Lapid falls from 19 seats today to 10 and Yahadut Hatorah maintains its seven seats.

The left-wing Meretz party headed by Zahava Gal-On earns seven seats, an increase from its current 6. A new party headed by former Likud Minister Moshe Kahlon earns six seats. The Movement headed by Justice Minister Tzipi Livni which not has six seats does not pass the minimum threshold to remain in Knesset, earning only three seats. The combined Arab parties receive 11 seats, increasing from the current 9 seats.

Who is best suited to serve as prime minister?

Binyamin Netanyahu 29%

Avigdor Lieberman 11%

Yitzchak Herzog 9%

Tzipi Livni 7%

Moshe Kahlon 7%

Naftali Bennett 5%

Yair Lapid 4%

Do you want to see the current Knesset toppled to head to elections?

45% no

38% yes

Professor Katz does not believe Kahlon’s votes are all from Shas but from a number of parties. He told Kol Berama on Sunday morning 23 Marcheshvan that among Shas voters, while they are politically right wing, many would prefer to see Labor leader Yitzchak Herzog as prime minister instead of Binyamin Netanyahu due to the Labor party leader’s socialist leanings but today, one does not vote directly for the prime minister, but for a party. Katz feels that no single poll can reflect a political climate but the accumulation of a number of weekly polls definitely paints a more accurate political picture.

  1. Has there ever been a poll the past 20 years ever showing Shas gaining?

Guess who runs the “Knesset Channel”

10 minutes ! before the polls closed last election on Jan.22, 2013,Arutz 7 was predicting Shas falling to 7 or 8 seats !

    ‘nough said

  2. americans need to realize (as british ,canadians and australians already do) that polls

    1)are much easier to manipulate
    2)harder to nail down

    in parliamentary systems

  3. Shas attracted many traditional Sephardim because of the backing of Rav Ovadia Yosef.

That has all changed under the leadership of Deri and Cohen.

  5. Israeli polls consistently underestimate the political strength of the hareidi parties, and also have historically underestimated the impact of Sefardi Jews. This is probably since most people answering polls assume the “right” answer is to indicate support of a leading secular party, but it leaves them free to vote hareidi on election day.

Shas may lost a bit since they are opposing conscription, and most Shas supporters are veterans, but it probably won’t be so radical.

  6. Israeli polls before the LAST ELECTION were completely on the mark (7 & 8), with the Shas # exactly correct and one less for UTJ, so can’t figure out who is in DENIAL..

Speak to SHAS voters in Yerushalayim and they will tell you “We favor Yishei”,, this news is old news. The Shas voters are usually right wing, supporters of Yehuda and Shomron and traditional yeshivish. Deri is talking of joining a LABOR/Herzog coalition and the voters are looking at other choices.

  7. #5

Hagaon Rav shalom Cohen to you, sir.

    The chutzpah.

    it’s pretty horrid for anyone,
particularly those were frothing and foaming at the insults to chaim Drukman & co. and who protested when R’ Yitzchak Yosef was calling middling talmidei chachamim “third rate”
