Knesset Speaker Calls to Remove Criminal Sanctions from Draft Law

idffKnesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein announced on Tuesday, 17 Kislev, that he feels that regardless of what government rules following the election for the 20th Knesset, it should remove the criminal sanctions component of the new draft law. This he explained is true for a left or right-wing government coalition.

Edelstein added that he tried his best to influence the Shaked Committee which was formulating the new law to induct chareidim into the IDF or a state-approved national service, but his words were discarded. He tried to persuade them to pass a law that did not include criminal sanctions for non-compliance, adding that today it is clear the plan failed and it had an adverse effect. He said that at the time he tried to speak out, the committee was unwilling to hear his words.

Edelstein feels that serving the nation is of paramount importance but also believes such efforts can be best accomplished by dialogue and mutual respect, and not be threatening with criminal sanctions. The speaker added that today we can see the results of the policy and it is a failure, and should be changed to remove the criminal sanctions component.

  1. It will depend on if the hareidim are needed for a coalition. Current Yesh Atid is seen as a poor partner by both camps. Mathematically, it is quite likely that the side that forms a government will have to choose between the hareidim and the prospect of an alliance with someone from the “other side of the fence” (or even a dreaded Likud-Labor coalition).

  2. #1. Maybe so, but the whole issue was because Lapid was in the government and that is how all coalition governments work. B”H, he is out of the picture and that changes things. Hopefully, it will stay that way.

  3. 2 fold problem, 1) hate to chareidim 2) looking at everyone as looking on terrorists , force is needed against terrorists not against your brothers, unless you feel they are not your brothers.
