Man Who Landed Gyrocopter at US Capitol Headed Back to Court

(Wednesday, July 22nd, 2015)

gyroA man who flew a gyrocopter through some of America’s most restricted airspace before landing at the U.S. Capitol is headed back to court and is asking a judge to let him add another lawyer to his case.

A status hearing for Douglas Hughes is scheduled for Wednesday in federal court in Washington.

Hughes said in a telephone interview before the hearing that he and prosecutors are nowhere near agreeing on a plea deal. Hughes has previously said he had rejected an offer that included significant jail time because it didn’t seem just for an act of civil disobedience in which no one got hurt.

Hughes has said his April 15 flight in the bare-bones aircraft was intended to call attention to the influence of big money in politics.

He did no harm, and the DC jury might be reluctant to convict him of anything more than being a nuisance.
