Court Date For New York Man Accused Of Supporting ISIS


arafatA New York man accused of buying combat gear and pledging allegiance to the Islamic State group is due in court on charges of attempting to support a terrorist organization.

Federal authorities say that at the time of his July arrest, Arafat Nagi of Lackawanna was planning his third trip to Turkey, with plans to cross into Syria in a bid to join the fighters.

The unemployed 44-year-old will be arraigned on a grand jury indictment on Monday.

Investigators say Nagi bought a machete and other gear, posted photos of severed heads on social media and pledged allegiance to leaders of Islamic State group on Twitter.

Defense attorney Jeremy Schwartz has said that neither Nagi’s travels nor purchases were illegal and that any Twitter postings were constitutionally protected.
