Shin Bet Detainee Released After Months in Detention

shinEighteen-year-old Mordechai Mayer of Maale Adumim was locked up in administrative detention by the ISA (Israel Security Agency – Shin Bet) five months ago. He was released when indictments were filed against others in the Duma arson investigation case. In his conversation with Ynet, Mordechai accuses the ISA of wasting five months of his life. Mordechai told Ynet the ISA operation was nothing more than a “Big lie” as he was detained as a member of some underground and after months in detention released when it was clear he had no hand in the arson attack in Duma.

From Mordechai’s perspective, he and others are arrested because of their large yarmulkes and peyos, nothing more. He told Ynet how he was taken away from his home by seven policemen, thrown in administrative detention and not permitted to take any belongings and without any explanation or rights. He added most of their time was occupied with limud Torah.

Mordechai is a son of Mr. Gedalya and Mrs. Sarah Mayer, both American citizens. They lamented how there was no one to speak with, no explanation – simply police took their son and no one heard their cries. Gedalya insists he was certain from the beginning Mordechai was not involved in the case despite the accusations against him. His parents are also pained to see how the country they chose to move to acts towards their son and others.

ISA officials responding to the report insist that while Mordechai was not involved in that case, he is indeed a member of a Jewish terror organization. The ISA is also going to reevaluate the restrictions against Mordechai which ban him from Yehuda and Shomron and place a nighttime curfew on him, explaining this will depend on their determination regarding if he poses a risk to others or not.

Honenu attorney Yitzchak Bam explains the organization is demanding an investigation that will include reexamining all the administrative orders issued against all involved.

  1. The members of the ISA cannot be Jewish. Jews do not treat other Jews that way. Check their yichus; you will probably find that they are the products of assimilated marriages, where either the mother, grandmother or great-grandmother was not Jewish. Or they are arabs, or the eirev rav. But Jewish they are certainly not.
