Prosecutor Wants To Send Talmid Yeshiva To Prison For Six Months For Failing To Register For The Draft

idffA talmid of Yeshivat Ateret Yisrael, 21, a resident of Bnei Brak, was arrested by IDF military police about 12 days ago. It appears that he simply failed to register for the draft, not because of hashkafa but he forgot or did not get around to it.

The ben torah stood trial on Monday 21 Sivan and the military prosecutor called to send him to prison for six months. The talmid’s parents explain his actions were not guided by ideology, rather he misunderstood, adding he was abroad for an extended period of time, leading to the current situation.

Heads of the yeshiva have also intervened on his behalf.

  1. Failing to register with the draft board in the United States is a felony punishable by a fine of up to $250,000 or a prison term of up to five years, or a combination of both.
In addition, one is not eligible for government student financial aid, loans and grants. Also, no government employment, security clearance for contractors, job training under the Workforce Investment Act, and U.S. citizenship for immigrant men.

  2. And the Arabs are free from joining the army. If an Arab is drafted in America it’s like any other citizen. So don’t compare American law to israeli law. They don’t need chareidim in the army. The army has sent home hundreds of seasoned soldiers today technology is taking over.

  3. No one simply fails to show: they dafka did not want to go and hand in simple papers that would release him from service.

He is acting in a negative manner and that possibly justifies the punishment that the state wishes to impose upon him.
