Two Infants Hospitalized In Ichilov Hospital Found To Be Carriers Of A Serious Bacterial Infection

Ichilov Hospital at Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center (3).jpgTwo infants, preemies, are admitted to Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv after being found to be carriers of a serious bacterial infection, one that does not respond to standard antibiotic therapy. They have been diagnosed carrying Carbapenem-resistant enterobacteriaceae bacteria (CRE) while not being ill themselves.

According to the Channel 2 News report, the hospital is working with Ministry of Health officials on the matter. It adds that last month there were four infants with CRE in Ichilov.

According to Wikipedia, CRE is referred to by some as the new “superbug”, which can kill up to half of patients infected with it, the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta reports.
