Rabbonim Meet To Discuss Worrisome Chilul Shabbos In Jerusalem

Rabbonim involved in combating Chilul Shabbos in Yerushalayim met over the weekend to discuss the situation. HaGaon HaRav Baruch Solovechik, a dominant Degel Hatorah figure in Yerushalayim and HaGaon HaRav Moshe Brazovsky (son of the Slonimer Rebbe Shlita) met in the office of attorney Yitzchak Meron in Tel Aviv.

During the Friday 12 Adar meeting which lasted two hours, the rabbonim studied the draft document reviewed by heads of the chareidi factions in Knesset; Aryeh Deri, Yaakov Litzman and Moshe Gafne during the latter’s meeting with Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat.

According to the document, there is no proof of a major increase in chilul Shabbos in the city during the tenure of the mayor and the violation of the Shabbos status quo is not as major as the media has reported to be the case.

The rabbonim were displeased with the document amid the awareness that there is an increase in chilul Shabbos in the city. They are aware of the increase in the number of convenience stores and cafes that are operating in the city on Shabbos.

A kenos is being held in Yerushalayim on Tuesday evening at 8:00PM at which chilul Shabbos in the capital will also be discussed as well as possible actions to counter the chilul Shabbos.

  1. I have been in EY several times in the past few years and haven’t observed any significant change in the number of commercial locations open on Shabbos. Its seems to ebb and flow with changes in neighborhood demographics, new building projects and the national security situation. Overall, these rabbonim should focus on making the beauty of shamiras Shabbos more accessible to the secular Israelis who patronize these establishments rather than trying to legislate “morality” and “hashkafah”.

  2. We know YWN is anti bnei Torah but to put in barely dressed ladies in a picture that’s pretty low!! “Aveira goreres aveira”
