Motzei Rosh Hashanah Israel News Round-Up


Six Firefighting airplanes together with 16 teams of firefighters on the ground battled a large forest fire in the Einot Tzukim nature reserve near the Dead Sea over the course of Rosh Hashanah. The fire raged in an area that did not have road access for vehicles to pass and thereby no firetrucks were able to to access the area making the mission extremely complicated. Three Arab suspects were arrested by Israeli police following a high-speed case down Highway 90 and then Highway 1. The three men are suspected of arson leading to widespread damage.

Terrorists threw a pipe bomb at Israeli security forces on Monday during Rosh Hashanah, at the Gaza border fence. Additionally, tires were burned and rocks were thrown at soldiers patrolling the border fence during protests which were held in the area. In addition to the unrest at the border fence, dozens of Gazan boats attempted to break the naval blockade around the Gaza Strip and  land in Israel. The boats were stopped by the Israeli navy who fired warning shots near the boats. No one was injured in the attempted breach.

In east Jerusalem’s Abu Dis neighborhood, terrorists threw a pipe bomb at the Border Police station. The bomb blew up outside of the base compound near one of the external gates. No injurie were reported in the blast, but severe damage was caused to the infrastructure of the wall. Police issued a statement following the attack saying: “Currently, a large number of officers are sweeping the area in an attempt to locate the perpetrators.”

In a separate incident on Tuesday evening, a border police officer saw an Arab man throw stones at the gate of the police base in Beit Jala. the guard was able to direct security forces to the suspect resulting in his arrest. The suspect is a 16-year-old boy from Hevron who was found to possess a set of brass knuckles on his person after he was detained.

Israel rejoiced in its first ever silver medal in the world championships of gymnastics. The feat was achieved by Linoy Ashram, who has risen steadily in the world gymnastics rankings. The competition took place in Bulgaria.

A 44-year-old man collapsed following a heart attack at the Geulah beach in Tel Aviv. Following intense resuscitative efforts, paramedics in the field were forced to pronounce his death.

A body was found in a car that had flipped over and caught on fire on a dirt road near the towns of Neve Atib and Majdal Shams in the upper Golan. Firefighters worked to prevent the spread of te flames, and police opened an investigation into the incident and the man’s death.
A 35-year-old man was killed during a work accident that took place in a  chemical factory in the Tamar region near the Dead Sea. The man had been caught underneath a heavy pile of metal.
A 17-year-old man drowned to death at the religious beach in Bat Yam just before the onset of Rosh Hashanah on Sunday.

A double car accident took place at the Acco junction on Highway 4 on Tuesday morning. A 54-year-old man was seriously injured while another three men were moderately injured in the second accident. According to reports in the Israeli media, the second accident occurred when one of the drivers who stopped at the first accident, suddenly hit the gas pedal and rammed into a number of people who stopped to help the injured from the first accident.
