A majority of Americans believe that all United Nations member states should recognize Palestine as a nation, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll released this week.
The survey found that 58% of respondents support recognition of a Palestinian state by UN members, while 33% oppose the idea and 9% did not answer.
The poll, conducted over six days and concluding Monday, comes as close U.S. allies including Canada, Britain, and France announced plans to recognize Palestine. It was taken against the backdrop of ongoing efforts to broker a ceasefire and hostage deal between Israel and Hamas.
Respondents also expressed strong views on the humanitarian situation in Gaza. Sixty-five percent said the United States should act to help people facing starvation there, while 28% disagreed. Among those opposing, 41% identified as Republicans aligned with President Donald Trump.
Meanwhile, 59% of Americans said Israel’s military response in Gaza has been excessive, compared to 33% who disagreed. That marks an increase from a similar Reuters/Ipsos poll in February 2024, when 53% said Israel’s response was excessive and 42% disagreed.
