North Korean Soldier Defects to South Korea, First Since August 2024

A North Korean soldier defected to South Korea on Sunday, crossing the heavily fortified border that divides the two countries, according to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff. The soldier was taken into custody and reportedly expressed a desire to resettle in the South. It was the first known defection of a North Korean soldier since August 2024 and remains a rare occurrence given the border’s land mines, fences, and heavy military presence.
