University of Miami officials are investigating a heated confrontation at a campus club fair after a student was captured on video making inflammatory claims about Judaism and directing hostile remarks at Jewish students staffing a pro-Israel table.
The incident unfolded this past Tuesday afternoon during tabling activities by Students Supporting Israel, a campus group affiliated with the national organization. Video footage shows a student identified in media reports as Kaylee Mahony telling Jewish students that the Talmud teaches Jews that eating with non-Jews is “like eating with an animal,” and gesturing toward them as she told bystanders that “these people” believe non-Jews are animals.
In the same exchange, the student appears to challenge the Jewish students on theology, making the ridiculous claim that Judaism was founded roughly a century after Christianity.
The University of Miami acknowledged the encounter in a statement Wednesday, confirming it was “aware of the exchange that occurred between students on Tuesday afternoon.”
“We strongly support our students’ rights to freedom of expression,” the university said, adding that “we understand that lines can be crossed.” The school said it has policies in place to ensure student safety and that the incident is being “investigated thoroughly,” emphasizing its commitment to a campus environment where students feel “safe, welcomed and supported.”
Additional footage appears to show a woman identified by the student newspaper, the Miami Hurricane, as a member of the university’s committee on student organizations escorting the student away from the table.
Ella Leon, a freshman and one of three students staffing the Students Supporting Israel table, told JNS that the confrontation escalated quickly. According to Leon, Mahony initially shouted “Free Palestine” at the students and accused them of responsibility for deaths in Gaza. When asked to lower her voice, Leon said, the student began yelling that “rabbis eat babies” and told people nearby that the Jewish students were “disgusting.”
Leon told the Miami Hurricane that the student also said Jews should not be allowed on campus and referred to them as “dirty,” allegations Mahony later disputed in a video posted to her TikTok account, which has since been taken down. In that video, Mahony appeared to deny using the word “dirty” or saying Jews should be barred from campus, while standing by other comments.
