New York City officials are weighing whether to expand metered parking across the five boroughs as Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s administration searches for ways to address a growing $5.4 billion budget shortfall.

First Deputy Mayor Dean Fuleihan said last week that converting some of the city’s currently free street parking to metered parking — or introducing “dynamic pricing” that fluctuates based on demand — should be part of the broader fiscal conversation.

“Yes, we should be looking at all those things,” Fuleihan said during remarks at a CityLaw breakfast event. Still, he cautioned that parking fees alone would not resolve the city’s financial gap.

“It’s not going to address the $5.4 billion problem,” he said.

New York City currently has more than 3 million street parking spaces, but only about 25% — roughly 800,000 — are metered. A study by the think tank Center for an Urban Future estimated that expanding the number of metered spots could generate as much as $1.3 billion annually.

The idea is already drawing criticism from lawmakers in the outer boroughs, who argue the proposal would disproportionately affect working- and middle-class residents who rely on cars.

“Like the mayor’s proposal to hike our property taxes, this is just another way to shakedown outer-borough households,” said Staten Island Councilmember David Carr.

Queens Councilmember Joann Ariola similarly warned that many neighborhoods lack sufficient transit options and depend heavily on personal vehicles.

The Mamdani administration has emphasized that its primary strategy for closing the deficit involves raising taxes on wealthy residents rather than relying on parking revenue.

“Our administration is committed to filling the budget gap by ending the drain on New York City and taxing the rich,” Mamdani said in a statement.

  1. New Yorkers are like the dog that chases cars. Finally, one stops, and the dog doesn’t know what to do with it. They wanted this nightmare meshugener. Now they’ve got him; they’re standing around clueless.

  2. Wow charging people 11 hours a day of meters to be on their own block? It will cause hell on Earth Beyond. Not practical and will probably result in people killing meter maids. It must be getting hard to find rich people to tax since they’re all leaving

  3. This crazy leftist tactic at underhandedly forwarding the “environment” agenda cloaked by various other fake descriptions is nothing new unfortunately to us over the pond in the UK:

The corrupt Sad-IQ Kahn (first muslim mayor of London-first similarity) the mayor of London, UK did the same exact thing. At first he mentioned that he wanted to make London a vehicle free city, to “clean” the environment (not just cleaner air), but when that backfired, he rebranded it as cleaner air for Londoners, but people were still not buying it,
    – and follow the similarities between the two mayors-:

    1. At which point he said he would lower bus fairs for all Londoners and “lock and cap the prices” (ask any Londoner about his incontrollable desire of picking this “lock” soooo many times).

    2. He then went on the attack on vehicles in many ways, implementing ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) which ultimately meant anyone with a petrol/gas car with a Euro 3/4 or less or Diesel Euro 6 or less would be charged £12.50 a day to drive in London, raising the congestion charge in the city, making crazy parking charges, legislation and everything to help making parking a huge cost, nightmare and near impossible.

    3. He then offered free ulez as part of the sheme to electric cars (ev’s) and hybrids.

    4. Once London was hooked onto this and kinda forced into it, he then slowly started raising bus rides again, and the government (not sure 100% but he probably had a big hand in this) went on to announce that EV’s would now start to be charged a per mile charge to replace lost revenue from car tax…..

Just watch, Mamdani will follow in his brother from the ummah (afra lepume) footsteps…
Welcome aboard New York to the era of leftist, woke corruption, lies, and all…
