Politico: Arab, Gulf Officials Fear Trump’s Public Attacks on Iran Could Undermine Nuclear Deal Talks

Arab and Gulf officials involved in the negotiations are increasingly worried that Trump’s repeated public humiliation of Iranian leaders could become one of the biggest obstacles to securing a comprehensive agreement with Tehran.

• According to the report, Iranian officials are believed to need some form of public “face-saving” in order to sell any deal internally, even if Iran ultimately accepts terms that leave it significantly weakened.

• Officials and former diplomats told Politico that Trump’s demands for “unconditional surrender,” along with repeated insults toward Iran’s leadership, risk cornering Tehran politically and making compromise far more difficult.

• The report notes that while Trump’s envoys continue pursuing negotiations behind the scenes, many diplomats believe Iran’s leadership places enormous importance on dignity, respect, and appearing victorious publicly even during negotiations.
