NATO Weighing Mission to Protect Shipping Through Strait of Hormuz Amid Iran Tensions

NATO is weighing plans to help protect commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz if the waterway remains blocked into July, according to alliance officials.

• The idea reportedly has support from several NATO members but still lacks unanimous backing ahead of a July 7–8 meeting in Ankara.

• The move would mark a major expansion of NATO’s role in the U.S.-Israel war with Iran after allies largely avoided direct involvement.

• A France-UK led coalition is already developing maritime security plans, though some countries remain hesitant about deeper involvement.
