According to the Japanese Kyodo news agency, dozens of Syrians were killed and injured in May 2009 as a result of a failed Scud rocket test, with the rocket slamming down into a marketplace near the Turkish border, in northern Syria. It appears that the death toll reached at least 20.
The media was not permitted to report on the incident. A second rocket which went astray landed near the Iraqi border.
