More On The ‘Yeshiva Student’ Arrested In Eilat By The IDF

1The protests surrounding the recent arrest of a ‘yeshiva bochur’ continue around the country despite the fact he was not acting exactly in line with a ben torah by partying in the southern resort city. The bochur explained that in line with the position of HaGaon HaRav Shmuel Auerbach Shlita he did not register for the IDF and therefore he was taken into custody.

Well known Jerusalem figure Rabbi Yisrael Gillis commented on the incident, telling Kikar Shabbos News “I am afraid to speak out realizing there is Satmar and within an hour my house will be up in flames. They will burn down my home and I prefer to sit and remain silent. Realize there are prominent rabbonim and askanim known in the chareidi camp who are afraid to speak out for they live in the city, and therefore they remain silent”.

Singer Yishai Lapidot comments “One must separate between the position of gedolei hador – when I was raised I was taught never to go against any of the gedolim and it does not matter whose side he is on – and askanim who clearly act in a certain derech”. He adds that today however, many have decided to take to the streets and protest for one who does not follow the way of gedolim but acts contrary to their instructions.

Lapidot feels that a bochur who is not in yeshiva does not come close to the actions of one who is, and he must serve in the IDF for two reasons; (1) it is a law-abiding Jewish country and (2) if he was indeed partying as reported, he is classified as a rodef regarding the hashkafa of his colleagues and the non-religious community sees this and believes the chareidim are simply draft-dodgers.

  1. Thank you Mr. Lapidot for your “daas Torah” and thank you YWN for availing us of the aforementioned singers much thought out daios. I’m sure Hagoan Rav Shmuel will rethink his psak after reading Lapidot’s klorer reiner daas Torah.

  2. Singer Yishai Lapidot should make up his mind if he is following the derech of Yisroel saba how he was raised to never to go against any of the gedolim, or whether he is making up his own mind and behaving accordingly. To the best of my knowledge no-one, but no-one, disagrees that HaGaon HaRav Shmuel Aurbach Shlita is one of the Gedolim today. Rav Shmuel has been at these demonstrations. Please do not disingenuously suggest he is being “handled” by askanim and doesn’t know or understand the issues here.

  3. That last part of the article is strange. Kikar Shabbat can’t interview a Gadol because they are afraid to talk openly, so they interview a SINGER for his Halachic opinion????

Plus I feel the need to react about the horrible fact that a mob (in this case peopled by Satmar, and, I assume, Neturai Karta) can control the entire kehilah, and even threaten Gedolim who have a shitah different than theirs. This is truly Ikvisa d’Moshiach, especially the “ikvisa” part.

  4. Are YWN so desperate to prove how unprofessional their reporting is?

Firstly the whole article is unclear.
Second – words are missed out along with bad grammar.
Third – Rav Gillis’s point is missed out with just a statement that he is afraid.
Fourth – Since when is Yishai Lapidots view something of such high importance that it needs to be publicised.

    Waste of time.

  5. The Zionists have no right to tell even struggling yeshiva bochurim what to do. He will be totally lost if he goes into the atheist IDF.

  6. this so called rabbi is full of you know what let him cite one instance where anybodies house was burned down because of his opposition to satmar 28 hours a daythe way this is the ruling of all the gedolim anyway whats wrong with partying he still is a yeshiva bochur and the chilonim will still perceive them as draft dodgers even if they study 28 hours a day

  7. This is hardly informative. It contains a few quotes, but from anyone in a significant position that could affect any change, and contains no new facts, only the same allegations.

A statement from Rav Shmuel Auerbach would be great, or at least a verification of just who is the “Yeshiva Bochur” they think they are protesting for, and which Yeshiva he is in.

  8. I find it interesting that YWN does not react to these negative comments against. When I even hint at less than a positive reaction I get lambasted and roasted publicly, even though i happen to respect them more than most people do. I wonder what I’ll get for this comment.

  9. Let’s be Honest and Mature! OUR גדולי ישראל know the situation better then us, they know good and well that unfortunately a small percentage of Yeshiva Bachurim are Chilling or worse. This whole story with this guy “caught” in Eilat isn’t new to them. Our Leaders knew the unfortunate situation (without being informed by YWN) and formulated their options. So sorry to disappoint some people out there, nothing will change now that the uninformed have been filled in on the reality.

  10. Why is some random singer given an interview and then quoted, especially when his remarks are so incorrect and anti-Torah?

Despite a large number of Jews (and non-Jews), the Zionist State of Israel is very much NOT a “Jewish” country but rather, liHavdil, a Zionist country. And it is not very law-abiding either, if the news is any indication.
