A BBC Arabic report regarding Syria�s response to the Knesset passing the Continuity Bill states Israel cannot hold a referendum on land it does not own. The bill compels a national referendum in the event the Government of Israel decides to relinquish control of areas under Israeli sovereignty, such as eastern Yerushalayim and the Golan Heights.

The BBC report quoting �Syrian sources� stated that the vote for the bill was another indication of the �extremist tendencies� of the Israeli lawmakers.
