Asra Kadisha Opposes Tiveria Construction Project

A small number of protestors identified with Asra Kadisha were in Tiveria on Monday morning, 11 Adar 5772, protesting against a construction project which they explain is taking place on a location containing ancient kevarim. The site is connected to the Boutique Hotel which is operated by the sons of the city’s mayor, Zohar Oved. Four protestors were taken into custody by police.

Chadrei Chareidim reports the Asra Kadisha fears are not unfounded according to many who are familiar with the project, located on Alchadif Street. Rav Shmuel Smeidal, who heads Asra Kadisha recently visited the site and speak with the mayor. The rav called on the city to halt the project to prevent “chilul kevarim”.

Chadrei reports that Asra officials confirm the city did not agree to halt the construction and therefore, this has become the new project of Asra rabbonim, insisting the organization is not about to sit by and permit the construction disturb the ancient kevarim in the holy city. Asra rabbonim feel the graves in question date back 2000 years or more.

Officials in charge of the construction project reject the Asra allegations, insisting there are no kevarim and that they have all the necessary construction permits in hand and as such, they plan to continue the project.

Police report that graffiti against Mayor Zohar Oved was painted on City Hall Tuesday morning, 12 Adar accusing the mayor of “Destroying kevarim”.
