Rishon L’Tzion Rabbi Yitzchak Yosef will be wearing the traditional “Glima” garb at an official ceremony set to take place next week. The recently elected Sephardi Chief Rabbi has avoided wearing the traditional hat and robe worn by the chief rabbi. The crowning ceremony will take place in the Yochanan Ben Zakai Shul in the Old City of Yerushalayim.
It is reported the robe will be woven with silver, modeled after the one worn by Rav Yitzchak Nissim. The event will be opened by President Shimon Peres, and Deputy Minister of Religious Services Rabbi Eli Ben-Dahan will take place. If his health permits, Maran HaGaon HaRav Ovadia Yosef Shlita is expected to attend and dress his son in the garb worn by Sephardi chief rabbis for hundreds of years.
Only 150 invited guests will be permitted to take part in the ceremony.

I didn’t understand this. How long has this position of Sephardi chief rabbi been around? Does someone know if there chief rabbis in communities outside of Israel?
There has a been a Chief Sepharadic Rabbi in Israel for over 500 years now…
