And I will answer it, but only during odd-numbered hours and minutes.

So I will answer questions on this thread from 1:00-1:59, 3:00-3:59, 5:00-5:59, and right now it’s 9:15, so you have until 9:59, at which point you will need to wait for 11:00.

Now you may complain that 00 is even! But I choose to be annoying and treat it as 0 even though it isn’t. And 0 is neither even nor odd, at least I choose to hold that opinion, so there and you can’t make me write a proof about it.

OneOfMany: LOL. Very cute. Everyone reading this thread, I advise you to google “the answer to life, the universe and everything.” You will find that my answer was correct according to Google. (it is now 11:00)

SecularFrummy: Even though you didn’t say what “equal numbers” are I figure you must be asking about let’s say the set of all integers vs. the set of odds? They’re equal because you can establish a one to one correspondence. (it is now 11:01)

Are there more numbers between negative infinity and positive infinity, or between 0 and 1?

Are there more numbers between negative infinity and positive infinity, or between 0 and 1?

Since there is no numeric range containing a larger amount of numbers than .9999999998 thru .9999999999, the answer to your question is “Neither”.

What is the combined weight of all the trees cut down to produce all the US money in circulation?

U.S. paper currency is cloth based, not wood pulp based. Zero pounds.

(Unless you count trees cut to produce power for the Mint and Bureau of Printing and Engraving, clearing land for the buildings, etc.)

SaysMe: Because she has problems (9:21)

Squeak: Both great questions. There are more numbers between 0 and 1, which is an uncountable infinity, than between negative and positive infinity of integers, which is a countable infinity, since uncountable infinities are larger than countable infinities. Therefore the infinity between 0 and 1 is larger. (9:23)

As for the trees, none. 9:25

ICOT: Start your own thread to answer questions. This is my thread and I don’t appreciate your infringement on answering. Feel free to ask any question you want though. 9:27

Popa_bar_abba: Very deep question. Without knowing the properties of the genie in question, and as a general principle based on oral traditions, it would seem wise to escape as fast as you can, and not ask for anything. 9:31

If you found a genie that only offered one wish, but he only answers wishes on odd numbers, and if its even he kills you, and you found him on a zero, would you ask?

    Trick question.

Answering wishes is useless. Granting wishes makes the risk worth considering.

    Torah613Torah

    My feelings are somewhat conflicted

By your rules should I be restricted?

To obey your wishes, to the letter

Or post answers that I know are better?

If you found a genie that only offered one wish, but he only answers wishes on odd numbers, and if its even he kills you, and you found him on a zero, would you ask?

Well that’s easy. I would wish for three more wishes.

See, zero is either both odd and even, or it is neither. If it’s neither, no harm no foul. If it’s both, he can kill me, but he also must grant my wish, which is to give me three more wishes (as any upstanding wisher would wish for). With one of those wishes I can wish that he does not kill me.

All of the numbers found between zero and one are also found between neg and pos infinity. Both are aleph sub one, therefore ICOT is correct. This means you have answered 2 of my questions on this thread incorrectly so far.

You manage a hotel with infinite number of rooms, but all are occupied. Suddenly an infinite number of busses pull up with an infinite number of guests who wish to get rooms. Can you accomodate them?

Squeak: You’re right, I looked it up. ICOT and squeak, thanks for helping me catch a mistake on an extra credit homework.

I think so, one at a time, but I’d better review this. I really struggle with the theoretical aspects of infinity. Every time I memorize the rules, I just forget them all the next day, it doesn’t click in my head. Can’t wait until this is over, and there had better be a reason they are forcing me to learn this some day. Do you (or anyone else here) have any advice for “getting” infinity topics? (11:45)

Are you asking questions here or answering? The correct answer is indeed yes (yay), but how?

And your answer about the number of numbers would have been correct if I had specified ordinary numbers between neg and pos infinity. That is a countable infinity, aleph sub 0.

    The Golem Speaks: Yes. 11:59

squeak: Yay! I now have a 50 on your course! (stop ruining the curve icot) I guess one at a time ad infinitum is not correct.

As for how: I don’t see why you can’t just move them all up one, then move each guest into room 1, then move them up one again, and move the next guest into room 1, infinite times. Instead the rule is that you can do 2n-1 (double each present guest’s number and take away 1, then move the first guest into room 1 and each guest n into room number 2n-1.)

I suppose the rule way is more convenient if you are trying to do it quickly but I don’t get why moving them up one is wrong or different. Feel free to answer questions since it is a new day and new rules.

Actually though the blame is on squeak for this one. He did not specify which infinite series between negative and positive infinity he was talking about, and so you assumed that he was talking aleph null class infinity, when really he was talking about aleph one class infinity (which he only later specified).

My father explained the difference between these through the pigeonhole principle, with the Hilbert’s hotel example and also the 99 bottles of beer. Just look those stuffs up. ^_^

    #945518

Because your way, you would need to ask each guest to move to their room number plus infinity in order to make infinite rooms available. They’d all end up going to the same room and tben you would have infinite complaints. By doubling the room number everyone has a unique room number to go to.
