Arrogance aside, do you think his ideals would make him a good president?

He has no chance of winning. If he were President he might be a good president. He did bring well deserved attention in the election to the problem of illegal aliens run amok.

There is a certain attraction to the idea of having someone from the real world as President instead of a career politician. The last non-politician President we had was Eisenhower and he did a pretty good job. During his tenure the country was prosperous, at peace and committed to social justice. I Don’t know if Trump is the same kind of guy. Even a non-politician has to know when practice politics. It’s true that he’s a successful businessman but the difference is that the boss can tell his subordinates what to do what he wants them to do and that’s that. A politician has to convince his constituents to do the same thing. A President has to rule by consensus, not by fiat (something that the current occupant of the White House is still having trouble with). My feeling that is that Trump is not the guy we need.

NB. By non-politician I mean someone who held no other elective office before being elected President. Reagan was from the real world and also did a pretty good job. Carter was from the real world and did an execrable job. Both, however, held elective office before becoming President.

I acutally think he would make a great president.

He is not afraid to say the truth the way it is. He is confident enough with himself, hes not buttering anyone!

He says the truth about immigration, problems with the economy etc.

Hes a shrewd businessman that can hopefully get the economy back on its two feet. No arguing that Bloomberg was a great mayor. You actually need brains to be a leader and a lot of it.

Unfortuantly, I think he has zero chance of winning

The Goq, you’re wrong. Arrogance aside, there’s the hair.

Haven’t several of his businesses gone bankrupt? How does that make him a successful businessman?

He didn’t become super-rich by being unsuccessful in business. He doesn’t own billion dollar properties around the world by being unsuccessful.

yehudayona, part of being successful is failing and being able to brush off the dust and start again.

The point is, now he is a success story. He knows hard work, he knows failure, and he knows success.

I think those are great qualifications for a president, especially one that has so much failure to build up.

While he has alienated a great many people since announcing he was running, he shouldn’t be totally ignored since:

    1. He is the only one appealing to the “red meat” (secular right) Republicans (even though he has alienated the Tea Party and the Religious Right and the Country Clubbers)

    2. He is in many ways more of a media celebrity who personna is a tough bully, but as a good actor, he may adjust to a new role, in this case, acting like a politiican. For example, without contradicting himself, he could come out for liberal immigration of law abiding Hispanics as long as they stay out of jail and don’t become a public charge. It depends who writes his lines. Good actors are very adaptable, and he is the only candidate with professional acting experience.

Trump has equal chance at being president as you do.

It is unlikely that he will even be the republican nominee, though he has a slight chance at that.

mimzee (who asked why he doesn’t have a chance):

    1. Being #2 in the polls is less important than the fact he is apparently is no one’s #2 choice. His position on immigration (and his personal life) alienates the religious right. His views on economics alienate the Tea Party. His nativism alienates most non-WASPs (if you look who is running, they are mainly non-WASP). Based on his positions, it doesn’t like he’ll pick up many votes as candidate drop out – and their really isn’t anyone like him running – so the 20% he now has is the best he’ll ever have.

    2. He’s basically an actor. The last actor to run was Ronald Reagan who learned how to “act” like a serious candidate – Trump hasn’t done that, yet. You win don’t win elections in an American style system by insulting people since unlike Israel with its proportional system, to win an American election you to get the support from the majority of the votes, not just a loyal base.

His chance of being the nominee are about as close to zero as his chance of becoming President. He is a social liberal. And his support has a low ceiling. If it ever came down to him and one other candidate, the majority of the party would take the other candidate.

Remember that in America, you need over 50% of the votes to win – and America doesn’t consists of 50% nativist conservatives supporting corporate welfare. To win Trump, or anyone, of either party, has to appeal to his entire base and the independents and try to get some support from the other party — and insulting people doesn’t help.

He said that most illegal immigrants ” have lots of problems and they’re bringing those problems. They’re bringing drugs, they’re bringing crime. They’re r…ists”

    Note not some. Most

Do either of you believe thats true?

Furthermore Listen to him in action. Truth or not he is mentally unstable, most people can see through his “truth”

That said I am so excited for the debtates! Its going to be hilarious!

Tact and backbone are not mutually exclusive.

Tact and diplomacy are more than just niceties when you’re head of state. Diplomacy can spell the difference between war and peace (yes even nowadays).

A president needs to have the ability to know how stick to his principles whilst still using common sense. Obama doesn’t have it and neither does Trump. (Or maybe Obama doesn’t have principles and Trump doesn’t have sense)

ca: In 2000, Bush and Cheney received over 50% of the votes of the Electoral College. The popular vote is not used in presidential elections to determine the winner, bur rather the Electoral College is. And, besides, neither Bush nor Gore received 50% of the popular vote as both candidates received under 50%. Bush received 47.9% and Gore 48.4%. So by that token neither candidate “won” a majority.

” The last non-politician President we had was Eisenhower and he did a pretty good job”

Not in the Middle East. He threatened Israel with UN sanctions for not withdrawing from the Suez and Gaza in 1957 in exchange for…nothing. And he promoted alliances with Arab states that were hostile to Israel; one — Iraq — was in a state of hot war with Israel (and still is).

ubiquitin, akuperma, i do believe Trump addressed crucial issues affecting Americans. You have to admit he has a strong stance as opposed to all the other candidates that are afraid to voice a stance one way or another lest they offend anyone & lose their vote. (ie: clinton, jeb bush)

A quick google search will show you that although he may not have held office previously, he is a baloney politician like the rest of them.

Trump was a DEMOCRAT ( that says a lot right there) and only became an R in 2009.He is flipping on everything from his opinion of Clinton (then: “she is wonderful, great” now: “she is terrible, the worst secretary of state ever”) to abortion (was pro choice {whatever that means} now is staunchly pro life), to toevah marriages. (his position is “evolving” 🙂 the last one to use that language was our great president). But at least its entertaining no? Another reminder what a golus we are in.

Charlie, “pretty good” doesn’t mean perfect. Yes, his middle east policies leaned more toward the Arabs to Israel’s detriment. But Ike was elected President of the U.S, not President of Israel. His, and every other President’s job is to protect and advance the national interest of the U.S. Remember that was the hight of the Cold War. The object was to mitigate and minimize Soviet influence in the Middle East. If that meant a little tough love for Israel, that’s what had to happen.

American support for Israel has always been a problem for U.S. diplomacy. Any administration has had to walk a tight rope between support of Israel, which is not only popular in the U.S. and has some commercial and strategic value but seems to be a moral imperative to the U.S., and alienating an Arab world that holds 70% of the world’s proven oil reserves and has the spiritual leadership of a billion Muslims. It is to the everlasting credit of the U.S. that, while they may have had differences over the years, America has never abandoned Israel.

America did abandon Israel in 56′ The fact that it was during the Cold War makes it worse not better, they took the side of their rivals The USSR against allies Britain and France in opposing Israel. You can say it was good foreign policy (It wasnt as it increased the Soviets presence in the mid east by getting Nasser to take the USSR side and support and he let the Soviets move in to Hungary at the same time, but that is way off topic) but it wasnt “never abandon[ing] Israel”

    Mimzee

“unless you think his tough persona is an act & he’s really a wimp”

He is a nothing. He is a publicity hound who loves having his name in the limelight. He says what he must know is stupid but says it in a bullyish tough guy manner. Someone who says his big secret plan to defeat Isis is to “bomb them and take their oil” isnt a might sound tough but most of the populace recognizes that as just that: sounding tough, thats all it is a tough guy act.

Though you havent answered my question earlier you said he “speaks the truth” He said regardign illegal immigrants they ” have lots of problems and they’re bringing those problems. They’re bringing drugs, they’re bringing crime…”

    Note not some. Most

Every illegal alien brings crime to America the moment he illegally crosses the border or overstays his (tourist) visa.

Joseph, the kind of crimes that concern most people are violent crimes and crimes against property. To most people, overstaying a visa is about as significant as parking for three hours in a two hour zone.

Many illegal immigrants came here to escape persecution or to get a better life for their children. They probably should have been allowed to come here legally in the first place, but now they are illegal immigrants and are considered violent criminals just because of their immigration status.

They aren’t criminals at all. It is not a crime to be in the United States illegally. It is a civil violation, like a parking ticket.
