How do you feel about people having their pictures up there for everyone to see? I think it shows a lack of tznius.January 27, 2009 4:15 am at 4:15 am #1026495
i don’t think it’s for us to judge, you don’t have to put up pictures, if the people want to they will, andif not then they wont.$January 27, 2009 4:32 am at 4:32 am #1026496
pic i dont like…posting on the other hand is fine depending on how u do it…i think its a great thing to have all the simchas up thereJanuary 27, 2009 4:36 am at 4:36 am #1026497
it depends on the pics. the mushy ones we can do without, but the regular ones are very sweet, and this way we don’t have to go in2 facebook and get stuck there. like i say, if you don’t like it, don’t go in2 it. i would takeh like to see these people’s pics. 3 yrs. later. are they still smiling?January 27, 2009 4:46 am at 4:46 am #1026498beaconParticipant
Besides for the lack of tznius, there are creepy people out there….I would not want some random person looking at my picturesJanuary 27, 2009 4:54 am at 4:54 am #1026499
i once saw my pic up by my friends vort-i was ready to kill her…so now whenever i go into any pic by a vort or chasana i always make them promise that its not going to find its way to onlysimchas or anyplace else on the internet!January 27, 2009 5:08 am at 5:08 am #1026500
So funny, I was actually looking at the website before, and now it’s a thread. Hmmm, well, sometimes, I like to look at this site to see if anyone I know had a simcha. (take this evening for ex. just found out a friends daughter got engaged,) I don’t think I would want my family’s pictures on view for the whole world to see. Lack of tzinus?? Yes, for sure. Some magazines won’t even show women’s faces, not to mention some of the girls may not be dressed to certain peoples standard. They get all types of yidden to the site.
I just made a simcha, and I was contemplating putting it up, then thought it’s not worth it. Also, I think some of the couples/families aquaintences post peoples names up. I saw friends names who for sure would not have their names listed and don’t even have internet. Then I see people posting their congrats to them. It makes me laugh, because those involved in the simcha don’t even know they have been posted on the site.
Also, anyone could write on your page. There was a couple one time,on the engagement page, the lady was wearing a sheitel(from the pictures you could tell), so I don’t think it was her first marriage for him or her. Some lady posted some kind of cryptic message to the chatan. Some crazy ex? who knows??January 27, 2009 5:10 am at 5:10 am #1026501JosephParticipant

It seems to have lost its popularity in my community; perhaps there was an incident. In so many families that I know, older siblings had OS pages when they got married and the more recently married siblings did not have them.January 27, 2009 12:09 pm at 12:09 pm #1026507

I think you are making mountains out of molehills. If it bothers you, why are you even on the site? IMO, you shouldn’t post pictures of your own, there. It’s not creepy, it’s not untzniusdig (unless the picture itself is tasteless), it’s just not your thing. I have never heard of anyone having trouble with OS, but if any ex’s are writing on people’s message walls and it BOTHERS them, I am sure they can report it to OS, and that person can be denied access to the site. The Jewish Press is widely read, and also posts these pictures.January 27, 2009 3:43 pm at 3:43 pm #1026509
syrian- why? i really mean it. life is not always easy and does not always go the way we want it to. i hope these couples are still smiling after 3 yrs. but truthfully, alot of them are not. sorry to sound so drab.January 27, 2009 4:08 pm at 4:08 pm #1026510squeakParticipant

oomis: i want to be on the site to see if anyone i know is engaged or married or whatever. why cant it be done in a tzniusdika manner. even if the pic is not tasteless its still not tznius for the whole world to see you.January 27, 2009 6:45 pm at 6:45 pm #1026512
even if the pic is not tasteless its still not tznius for the whole world to see you.
Flatbush, what defines “the whole world”? How many people looking at a picture of you is tzniusdig and how many is not? Perhaps no pictures of women should be posted in a home, so that male visitors don’t see the pictures?January 27, 2009 6:50 pm at 6:50 pm #1026513
actually, many chassidim and litvocks dont have family photos in a home because of ayin haras and it isnt tznius. people draw the lines differently than you and should be respected.even one person who doesnt know you for beans is the “whole world”.January 27, 2009 7:43 pm at 7:43 pm #1026514random88Member

That goes both ways. I don’t have a problem with people not posting their pictures or not hanging pictures on walls of their homes, but you do seem to have a problem with people posting pictures on OS. Its not a one way street.
It seems the people who use OS like having pictures posted as many post their own. The site caters to the users of the site, not the minority.January 27, 2009 9:13 pm at 9:13 pm #1026516random88Member

i think there are many more people on the site who do not have their pics posted than those who do so the site should cater to them and stop posting pictures (except maybe baby pics)January 27, 2009 9:16 pm at 9:16 pm #1026517syriansephardiMember
Amchai: its just not nice. That’s not how u should look at a new married couple- are they gonna be happy in 3 years? That’s crazy!!! You should hope they are gonna be not go making judgments if they will be! That’s my opinion…January 27, 2009 9:30 pm at 9:30 pm #1026519
not e/o whose simchas are posted know about it or even read it(i personally think its obnoxious when u post pic of the chosson and kalla w/o them knowing) there have been plenty of times when i had to print out my friends os page for them bec they dont have accesses to the internet or a few weeks ago my friend told me that she just saw her os page for the first time(and now she has 2 kids)January 27, 2009 9:39 pm at 9:39 pm #1026520

A lot of times those pages are started by well meaning friends and relatives and when the couple does not want them up people either do not comment or they ask that the pics be taken down or changed.
You can set up a page for anyone and it is taken down only if someone complains. I was a victim of a prank pulled by a gang of stalkers I had been trying to bust and a friend saw it and reported it – only way I knew was when my friend told me about it. I then asked that my name be banned from OS until further notice and they complied.
I also tried a Purim prank a couple of days before Purim 5767 by posting the infamous pic of the new Homon Mad Mahmoud hugging his kallah M.A.F. as a chassune between the chosson from Teheran and the kallah from Vienna. It was promptly taken down :(.January 27, 2009 11:04 pm at 11:04 pm #1026526intellegentMember
i didn’t read through all the threads so maybe i’m being repetitious. my friend had her pictures posted and she was not happy about it as she does not want her face on the internet. i think it should be obvious that someone should need to give their permission before their pics are posted!January 27, 2009 11:46 pm at 11:46 pm #1026527

Amichai, I’m glad I don’t know you and your wife.
It’s such an oxymoron. The same day the girl agrees to belong to one man, she posts pictures of her for all the males in the world to see. I’m sure that shows modesty and her devotion, somehow…January 28, 2009 2:03 am at 2:03 am #1026529asdfghjklParticipant

I have always had mixed feelings about OS untill I saw something that really disturbed me. Someone had a bunch of wedding pics up and on the guest page a person- Presumably male, posted “hey, I dont know you and i am using s/o elses screen name to post but whose that georgeous girl in picture #x”- I am not joking!! then, in that picture he inserted himself using one of the features where a box encircles a face in a picture and has that persons name at the bottom. in this case, he didnt put a picture of himself, rather just the box w / the “fake” sign in name he was using, as though he was “standing” next to her.
Even if it was a joke, the whole thing was extremely distasteful and bordered on being crass.January 28, 2009 4:30 am at 4:30 am #1026534

lets make a site called onlyfrumsimchas.com where NO pics will be displayed so we wont have any of chasids problems and all the MO’s could have a blast all to themselves on onlysimchas.comJanuary 28, 2009 8:50 pm at 8:50 pm #1026548
Flatbush, why not email onlysimchas totell them of your concern? If enough people do that, then they may decide to remove pictures.
One reason I like pictures is because it helps you identify who the person is. I am sure there are a lot of “Chani Friedman’s” from Flatbush. How would you know if you should call and congratulate her? Maybe its a different person and calling her might make her feel bad because “yet another person got engaged before her.”January 28, 2009 9:05 pm at 9:05 pm #1026549
both very good points SJS. i should email them. but on your second point i feel the issue of tznius takes precedence over your “How would you know if you should call and congratulate her?” problem. i dont think anyone will disagree with thatJanuary 28, 2009 9:07 pm at 9:07 pm #1026550
SJS – what one of the Chabad sites does is list both chosson and kallah as ben or bas their fathers because we have so many people with similar names (Chani bas R’ Mendel Cohen to Mendy ben R’ Yossel Katz)
All OS would need to do on OS is add an option to enter that info for chosson or kallah.
