Jax: I was asking because it is (although most people wont believe it) a game of mostly skill and not luck.

Is the stock market be considered gambling?

aussie: yeah of skill not just pure luck!

aussie, good question. everyone has stocks, though and they don’t all gamble. it’s more like a business risk, i think. is buying a house and flipping it gambling? i doubt it?

But there are risks involved. Why cant we say that a poker game is skill with some risks involved? What makes it different from the stock market?

moish: Do you play poker? If you do you will know what I mean about it not being a game of chance, but of skill.

aussie, I could hear that poker is a skill, though there’s definitely a risk or gamble involved.

the answer i got to moish’s question was that the point isn’t that you didn’t know the answer before & now you’re learning it for the first time. but that asking & then answering is the way we talk about it. i think like when someone tells a dvar torah, they ask a question & then answer it, it’s a way of making a point.

about echad mi yodea, i get all the others but what does 9 have to do with anything?

9 months before a baby is born? why not? if anything you could do away with #11. that’s got nothing to do – especially because the 12 shvotim are next.

well what is the song supposed to be a list of in the first place?? & 9 months isn’t even a jewish basic, like you were saying. It’s just a fact for anyone.

Yeah i see what you’re saying. 11 is kinda weird too.

AOB: I dont really, but according to the torah your not allowed to gamble so if I am doing something wrong I like knowing about it.

moish- I was about to ask your ma nishtana question a few times, and caught myself each time. Why? I was scared one of the people sitting at the table is a member of the CR!!! hahahahaha- t’would never do to blow my identity wide open, now would it

aussie: i haven’t heard of that before & i’d find out the real story before i assume i can’t do something.

i didn’t even mention the cr, just asked the question & mentioned i saw it somewhere

aussie: im gonna try & find out but it’s kinda weird to just go to my father & ask out of the blue “are you allowed to gamble?” he’s definitely gonna ask why i’m asking & i then get left with nothing to say…

    #1080141

You can just say a freind said it.

aussie: no, i say that & he’ll for sure ask me who & try 2 figure it out, he’s like that. & i say aussieboy, i’m dead meat 😉

but i did try asking, it was too broad. he was like “what do you mean, gambling? can you do chinese auctions?”

so to find out you would need to ask more than “is gambling assur?”. but while i also want to know the details myself, i don’t think you should fully trust the halachic stuff on an anonymous forum like this, even if you think something here is true, find out from someone you know personally before going by it.

random question: does anyone have any good ideas (that they’ve tried, and know works) for cleaning jewelery (with chips) my rings mysteriously got hand cream on it, and the chips look a little duller…

me neither, BUT this came up recently (& someone was asked), so the most i know is it’s not a quick & easy answer.

22oldgold: did you mean for most people to do? or deaf people? is it used for actual communication (or just fun)?

i don’t recommend getting a final answer for anything here. it’s anonymous & you don’t know who is answering & where they’re coming from.
