Hey chevra,
I love cars and I’m contemplating buying a Corvette, but before I make my purchase I was thinking should a Yid own a sports car? Maybe it’s to gashmi …… waddaya say folks?
December 26, 2010 8:44 pm at 8:44 pm #724393bombmaniacParticipanti asked a similar question to rav moshe meir weiss recently…he said as long as you wont cause ayin hara…go for it.
December 26, 2010 8:44 pm at 8:44 pm #724394HomeownerMemberNo. Get a Chevrolet Suburban. It’s much more balabatish.
December 26, 2010 8:45 pm at 8:45 pm #724395Baruch BohmParticipantCoffee room is always good for a laugh! Nothing wrong with owning any car one can afford. Probably a little “gashmi” to write about it in the coffee room though (especially when your username is SIMPLEkindaman)
December 26, 2010 8:48 pm at 8:48 pm #724396real-briskerMemberYou definetly dont sound so simple!
December 26, 2010 8:59 pm at 8:59 pm #724397frumeyidParticipantIt’s a simple sports car. The expensive ones start at Porsche and go all the way up to Bugatti…
December 26, 2010 9:07 pm at 9:07 pm #724398aries2756ParticipantIf you feel you are giving into your Yetzer Harah and it bothers you then don’t ask anyone’s opinion on it, you need to figure that one out for yourself. Maybe you need chizuk to work a little harder on fighting the yetzer horah. If you are asking what a Yid is allowed to do or not, why is that different than building a huge home, or wearing a cartier watch or whatever floats your boat? If it is something you feel you would enjoy and you worked for that privilege why not treat yourself and enjoy it?
December 26, 2010 9:13 pm at 9:13 pm #724399popa_bar_abbaMemberDefinitely go for the corvette. You get the performance of a car 5 times the price.
December 26, 2010 9:40 pm at 9:40 pm #724400nfgo3MemberThere’s a joke I heard 30 years ago that answers your question:
This Jew buys a Corvette and takes it to a Conservative rabbi, and asks the Rabbi for a brucha for the Corvette. “I don’t know a brucha for a Corvette.”
So the Jew goes to an Orthodox rabbi, asks the rabbi for a brucha for the Corvette. And the Orthodox rabbi asks, “What’s a Corvette?”
So the Jew goes to a Reform rabbi, asks the rabbi for a brucha for the Corvette. And the Reform rabbi asks, “What’s a brucha?”
December 26, 2010 10:59 pm at 10:59 pm #724401RuffRuffMemberI second aries’ advice. It all depends where you coming from, and what your drive is. For some, going for doubles is giving in to a Ta’ava, while for others it is so good that I think I’ll have another, anything wrong with that?
December 27, 2010 12:36 am at 12:36 am #724402frumeyidParticipantA Jewish man buys a Lamborghini. However, after buying it, he feels a bit guilty, so he goes to the Rabbi of the Orthodox synagogue in his town and asks for a Mezuzah for the Lamborghini.
“You want a Mezuzah for what?” the Rabbi asks.
“It’s a Lamborghini,” the man replies.
“What’s a Lamborghini?” asks the Rabbi.
“A car, an Italian sports car.”
“What? That is blasphemy!” the Rabbi shouts. “You want a Mezuzah for a sports car? Go to the Conservatives!”
Well, the man is disappointed, but he waits a few days and finally goes to the Conservative Rabbi and asks for a Mezuzah.
Go to the Reform!”
Again the man feels guilty and disappointed, but finally he breaks down and goes to the Reform Rabbi.
“Rabbi,” he asks, “I’d like a Mezuzah for my Lamborghini.”
“You have a Lamborghini?” asks the Rabbi.
“You know what it is?” says the man.
“Of course, it’s a fantastic Italian sports car……………………… What’s a Mezuzah?”
December 27, 2010 1:15 am at 1:15 am #724403amazingirl97ParticipantOkay, do what you think is right. As long as your not going to get a Ferrari. That might be taking it a bit to far. But if you want a Corvette, decide if you really want to waste your money on a Corvette. Waste it on something useful.
December 27, 2010 1:21 am at 1:21 am #724404apushatayidParticipantIf you really want to stick out like a sore thumb forget the corvette. Get an suv with custom rims.
December 27, 2010 1:31 am at 1:31 am #724405TheGoqParticipantsorry frumeyid, nfgo’s joke was funnier and he was first
December 27, 2010 2:05 am at 2:05 am #724406BEST IMAParticipantIf you are still a teenager i would say definately no to a sports car. Otherwise why not? We were deciding between the Corvette and the Nissan Z for my son. We ended up going with the Z. Loved it! The Vette is really low on the floor so you have to be careful parking it. Enjoy it and drive safely!
December 28, 2010 11:46 am at 11:46 am #724407shev143MemberSure, why not. Just change your memeber name from “Simple…man”
December 28, 2010 4:45 pm at 4:45 pm #724408cleverjewishpunMemberThe OP user name is a line from a Lynyrd Skynard song “Simple Man”
One of my top ten favorites of all time due to the guitar solo being really appropriate for the arrangement and the context.
Some lead guitarists feel the need to flex their muscles every chance they get. A great lead guitarist will know when to pull back.
@Simplekindaman – go pick up a copy of “One More From The Road” – a fantastic live edition of that song is on it!
December 28, 2010 8:02 pm at 8:02 pm #724409SimpleKindaManParticipantI love Lynryrd Skynard i saw’em in concert a few years back … i think a few of the original members died but it was still the same awesome solo…

December 30, 2010 2:25 am at 2:25 am #724413YaacovMemberwhats wrong with German cars?
they’re great cars, I love my Volks… nothing assur about it…
December 30, 2010 3:47 pm at 3:47 pm #724414cleverjewishpunMember@SimpleKindaMan I’m not sure I how I feel about bands still touring after core members from the original lineup are no longer involved..I think it’s greed/graveroberry of the worst kind. That being said, if they ever come around my neck of the woods again I’ll probably go.
I’m still waiting for the original lineup of Guns & Roses to reunite
Did you decide on the car?
December 31, 2010 1:24 am at 1:24 am #724415winny1Participantsimple: it beats a horse and buggy.
December 31, 2010 4:23 am at 4:23 am #724416HERSKOMembergo for the gt-r. better perfomance
January 4, 2011 5:12 am at 5:12 am #724417SimpleKindaManParticipanti ended up getting an old subaru station wagon……prishus ya know.
January 4, 2011 5:41 am at 5:41 am #724418miamigirl613MemberNo doubt about it. If you can afford it why not enjoy it. Now I wouldn’t say to drive past places just to show off your car. Everything should be done in a reasonable manner. Since a corvette is a standard car that many have, it should be fine. However, if it was a bugatti or something similar then that might be an issue.
January 4, 2011 7:02 pm at 7:02 pm #724419cherrybimParticipantIh the Yid learned in Slabodke, of course a sports car is the way to go; if he learned in Nevardik, he’s a gornit and should take the bus.
January 4, 2011 11:16 pm at 11:16 pm #724420mewhoParticipantall those fast sports cars are beautiful but pointless if you live in nyc. you cant go fast anywhere and you will destroy it over time from the potholes
