As most of you already know,police are becoming much more strict with talking/texting while driving. last night someone got a ticket for looking something up in his planner on his cell- he wasnt even talkig!!
let me ask you- what is worse, holding a cell phone in your hand, or having a dog on your lap while driving?!? dogs can be much more distracting, they walk all over the car, why is that allowed while holding a phone is not?

Does it matter? Each “infraction” should be judged on it’s own merits, not based on how it relates to other offenses. Just because driving with your dog on your lap is legal doesn’t mean that looking at your cell phone while driving should be legal. Perhaps they should *both* be illegal — and the only reason dog lapping while driving hasn’t been banned yet is because there aren’t enough incidences of it to warrant serious attention.

Because how are they supposed to address a problem before they know it is one?

Is it? Oh darn. I thought the first responsibility was to figure out if the car is driving down the road or if the car is stationary and the road is passing underneath. 🙂

It has been suggested that you could argue your way out of running a red light by saying that due to the dopler shift it looked green. Of course you may then get a speeding ticket for doing .66 the speed of light. 😉

boredstiff, was your obsession with dogs in cars? Did you have an incident or something? You started this thread as “Talking While Driving” but then you went on talking about puppy lapping. Why didn’t you title the thread “Dog Driving” or something?
boredstiff- 2 points: If dogs in cars are so much of a problem, what about babies in cars? That can be distracting too. Should we stop allowing people to drive around with babies?
Also (and this is the real issue) I have never heard of any problems with dogs, and if there are, the evidence seems anecdotal at best. Cell phones (talking, texting, using in any other way) have been PROVEN to be at least as dangerous as driving drunk. There have been numerous studies done on this, including one that showed that the reaction time and reflexes of someone using a phone are as impaired as those of someone whose BAC is just over the legal limit. It has been demonstrated again and again: DON’T USE YOUR PHONE WHILE DRIVING. If you absolutely MUST take that call/text/check the planner etc, and for some reason it just can’t wait until you get to where you’re going, PULL OVER. It’s so simple, and it’s just not worth the risk of injury or death (c’v) for yourself or others.

Boredstiff, you should give people the benefit of the doubt, be “dun l’caf z’chus”; the driver may be holding a Seeing Eye Dog.
how many times have u seen dogs on the lap of the driver and their heads out the drivers window??

He wasn’t disagreeing with you – he was saying that a driver shouldn’t be so distracted that s/he can’t concentrate on the act of driving — regardless of the source of distraction.

Thanks amichai- You are right when will we learn that driving a vehicle is a privilege not an entitled right of age. What I mean is one needs follow the rules of the road, as well as not putting passangers human or animal in danger by not being focussed on the road as well as the other vehicles that are in proximity to your vehicle.
boredstiff- either you don’t have kids or you’ve never had to drive your baby somewhere alone. Babies may not be walking around the car, but they can shriek pretty loudly, even to the point where you need to pull over. It can be tempting also to turn around and look at them in that situation. Accidents have happened where a driver was paying too much attention to the kid and not enough to the road.
If the dog is moving around it should be illegal, if the kid is moving around it should be illegal. (I’ve seen many frum drivers with kids on their laps or jumping around.) Sorry, but a kid screaming from their car seat shouldn’t be illegal, because like you said if it becomes a distraction the driver would pull over!
