still setting up my resurrected computer.
i would like to claim some disk space.
i have about 10 gigs of jpegs
and 35 gigs of audio shiurim
that i only access occasionally.
would like to buy winzip and zip them
can anyone estimate, ballpark, how much 45 gigs will shrink after zipping?
January 12, 2011 5:18 pm at 5:18 pm #727631SJSinNYCMemberI don’t know, but how about buying an external hard drive?
January 12, 2011 5:21 pm at 5:21 pm #727632gavra_at_workParticipantI don’t think mp3s save much when zipped, agree with SJS’s suggestion.
January 12, 2011 5:23 pm at 5:23 pm #727633I can only tryMemberHi.
My experience has been that media files (photos, audio and video) don’t compress much, if at all.
The .jpg format in particular is already considered “lossy” due to its compression.
Compression is most effective for text files (both “plain” .txt and word processor documents), as well as spreadsheets.

would like to go with storage on the second hard drive for now
January 12, 2011 5:26 pm at 5:26 pm #727635Todros GimpelParticipantPlease don’t waste money on winzip.
First of all, 7-zip is free and is better than winzip in almost every way.
Secondly only text based files compress significantly.
Jpegs, audio and video files all can’t be compressed much at all as they are all compressed formats to start with. So you won’t save almost any space through zipping them.
I fully agree with SJSinNYC that an external hard drive is a much better eitzah for you here.
January 12, 2011 5:45 pm at 5:45 pm #727636YW Moderator-80Memberfrom the responses here i was able to google more accurately.
i found out:
1.in general 7-zip is probably much better than winzip as todros said
2. for jpeg files winzip Vers. 12-15 has a special algorithm that compresses them about 20%. i dont know if 7-zip does this.
3. i wasnt able to get any specific info on mp3 files except that they dont compress much as was said
January 12, 2011 5:47 pm at 5:47 pm #727637seeallsidesParticipantget an external drive – a 2TB one can be gotten these days for 70-80 if you find a good deal – you can get two and have two copies of it and never run out of space and have them organized for when you want them
January 12, 2011 5:49 pm at 5:49 pm #727638Diet CokeMemberThe best way to go is with an external drive

3) I need a name for my company. “Seagate” is nice, but already taken. What does the oilam think of “Watergate”?
January 12, 2011 6:10 pm at 6:10 pm #727642bezalelParticipantAre the audio files already compressed? If not you can save alot of space by converting them to MP3 or OGG.
January 12, 2011 6:20 pm at 6:20 pm #727643YW Moderator-80Memberthey are mp3 already
this discussion is moot

January 12, 2011 6:31 pm at 6:31 pm #727645Todros GimpelParticipantI looked into it and it seems like Winzip can compress jpegs about 20% better than 7-zip.
I didn’t know that.
MP3’s are already compressed to the max and no compression method in common use will make a difference.
January 12, 2011 6:39 pm at 6:39 pm #727646YW Moderator-80Membertodros
what i found is that winzip can compress jpegs 20% from their non compressed state
it didnt say anything comparing this to 7zip
maybe 7zip can do even better
January 13, 2011 3:53 pm at 3:53 pm #727647seeallsidesParticipantby the way – newegg has a great deal today 1/13th on a 2 tb drive for 70

That’s a great price.
Just a suggestion – posting the URL to the actual item can be helpful (and save time).
January 13, 2011 9:12 pm at 9:12 pm #727649Todros GimpelParticipantMod-80
I did research and found that only winzip can compress jpegs that much.
7-zip’s compression is way better for almost all other (compress-able) file types.
By the way, what did you do le’maaseh?
