Fat does not “turn into” muscle – ever. One way you can lose fat by increasing cardio and being sure to have healthy WHOLE FOOD FATS (avocado, nuts, in your diet). It is also extremely important to cut sugar. Decreasing calorie intake just causes your body to create more cortisol which, in turn, INCREASES fat stores.

A second (and better) way to lose fat is to actually increase muscle as a pound of muscle burns more calories at rest than a pound of fat so you increase your ‘resting metabolic rate.” This is the rate at which your body burns calories at rest

You do not have to worry about becoming bulky or “muscle-bound” as it would take a lot more than you could possibly do on your own without seriously trying and, if you are female, it’s even more difficult since women have less muscle fibers than men to begin with.

Finally, despite what oomis has said , a pound is a pound, whether it is a pound of muscle or a pound of fat. The difference is that muscle takes up LESS space so you can stay the same size or even get smaller yet weigh more because you have 2 pound of muscle where 1 pound of fat used to to be.

But, in order to build more muscle you need to lift heavier weights as well – 20 reps w/ 5 pounds is waste of time. 8 reps w/12-20 pounds is faster ( ask long as you can maintain proper form) and will get you better results.

    Hope this helps.

I was in the hospital, having a miscarriage. The nurse comes into the room and says,

“And how are WE today????” In that annoying perky tone a woman having a miscarriage does not really appreciate.

My response, “My day is actually pretty lousy considering I’ve just lost my baby!” I must admit, I did edit this a little….And, as a general rule, I’m upbeat and happy but this was just really over the top!

In general I troll around in the background when it comes to CR but for this question I specifically registered to post a reply.

As a parent of a son in yeshiva in EY and a daughter going back for shana bet my 2 cents is as follows – I have complete emuna that as long as my children are doing what they are supposed to be doing where they are supposed to be doing it, whatever happens is what is supposed to happen – no matter where they are. This is especially evident in the past weeks and today as we see certain events unfolding that seem to make no sense to us.

I am often reminded of the family that left Efrat during the Intifada to go to Yerushalayim for a break from the violence and were victims of the Sbarros suicide bomber – lo aleinu. Our job is to do HaShem’s ratzon to the best of our ability and leave the rest up to HKB”H.

HaShem has His plans and it is up to us to do the right thing with complete confidence and menuchas hanefesh that HaShem is in control.

If it is really causing a machlokes in the family, perhaps you should ask your Rav – assuming, of course, that everybody involved is willing to live w/the answer. The guidance of daas Torah is reassuring and the key to many shalom bayis issues.

    Wishing you hatzlocha.
