    Israeli chutznik, we are being VERY FAIR to the israeli [lack of] system. As i pointed out in another thread, the israeli system generally is very underequipped.

    Take the snow. How much does it take to be a little proactive and grit the roads before it starts? A bit of grit woud have gone a long long way.

    The light rail company have a special piece of equipment to clear the tracks of snow. Yet the israelis simply didn’t bother buying it. Why do the isralei always wait for problems and then solve them about a third of the way rather than being more proactive?

    If you google confiscating shoes, the second site that will come up is called misterpoll. If you follow the link you will see at least one kid claims that when his shoes confiscates shoes they confiscate the socks too!!!!

    On the second site to come up there was a poll about it, and here are some results:

    Over 88% said that it was used as a punishment in their school.

    36% said they loved it, 27% as no big deal

    68% said they prefer to forfeit their shoes to staiying in detention.

    Also, a quote;

    Whether or not shoes confiscation is a punishment, it does solve problems. If you take away shoes for kicking and fighting,a student can not harm a person in just socks as he can with shoes on. If you take away shoes for running in the hall, the offender can not run in the hall very well in just socks. If you take away shoes for walking on the gym floor with shoes on, the person will not walk on the floor with shoes on because He has to be in socks. If you take away shoes for fogetting materials or leaving without permission, the person will not do that again because He would have to leave without his shoes. The goal is to solve the problem and keep the behavior from happening again. Shoe confiscation can do this for certain offenses.

    Popa, i think your moshol to cutting off hands is entirely unfair.

    The rabbi invlved was a well meaning – if somewhat misguided – ba’al teshuva

    Zushy and chicken pulka – they did it to me too, and i hated it.

    If i knew it was happening – i was running late to school, or had done something the day before and told to come to the rpincipals office the next morning etc… i would ocme with an extra pair of socks, although it ws still very embarrasing.

    Golders Greener – i think that you are right.

    Oomis, why is Yitzchok eisik any different than Shlomo Zalman or even Osher Zelig?

    147, I disagree, yiddish names have been used by gedoimlim over the centuries, and are listed in shulchon oruch and are therefore uncomparable to english names.

    R’ kanievsky told a friend of mine too to dress his boys in long sleeves, he also told the father that wearing his watch night be loi tilbash.

    R’ Dovid solovaitchik promised y friend that if he sits and learns he will be matzliach.
