House Oversight Panel Plans Subpoena For Trump Appointee

The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee’s Republican chairman has agreed to subpoena one of President Donald Trump’s appointees at the Justice Department concerning the inclusion of a citizenship question in the 2020 Census.

Democrats are overwhelmingly opposed to including the citizenship question, saying it will depress the count in communities with large immigrant populations.

John Gore, acting assistant attorney general, was scheduled to testify Tuesday as the committee reviewed the Census Bureau’s readiness for the 2020 Census. He did not attend the hearing.

South Carolina Rep. Trey Gowdy says Gore’s absence was “disappointing to say the least.”

Gowdy says Gore “is coming to talk at some point or another whether he wants to or not,” and says he would be happy to issue a subpoena.
