Ex-Trump Campaign Manager Says Bloomberg is a 2020 Threat to Trump

President Donald Trump’s former campaign manager said Wednesday Democrats need to nominate a Washington outsider to compete in 2020.

Corey Lewandowski said he believes former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg would instantly become a serious challenger to Trump if he ran as a Democrat, as he is reportedly considering.

Lewandowski, now an adviser to Vice President Mike Pence’s Great America PAC, said the billionaire media mogul has a personal narrative that mirrors Trump’s and is “an American success story.”

Bloomberg is founder and CEO of Bloomberg L.P., a global media company. He served three terms as New York City mayor and has variously been a Democrat, Republican and Independent. He twice flirted with running for president as an independent candidate, but ruled it out.

Lewandowski predicted the Democratic lawmakers eyeing a White House run would fare worse against Trump because they would have to defend their voting records.

Lewandowski spoke with reporters Wednesday at a Christian Science Monitor breakfast.

  1. Bloomberg can be a liberal Republican or a conservative Democrat. Or he can run as a moderate third party (but to be serious, he should recruit a large number of sitting moderates form both parties to make it clear this is a permanent third party). And conservative Democrat would be a serious threat to Trump if he/she could hold on to the Democrats increasingly left-wing (socialist) while also appeal to moderates of both parties. That is unlikely to happen. At this point, it seems Trump in 2020 (or another Republican, Pence is the most likely if Trump isn’t running for whatever reason) will be blessed by being able to run against someone probably to the left of Bernie Sanders so that even the Republican “never Trumpers” will have no choice but to vote Republican.
