Palisades Parkway Police Chief Resigns After Cocaine Arrest

A New Jersey police chief suspended after his arrest on charges of buying cocaine and having it shipped to his post office box has resigned.

The executive director of the Palisades Interstate Park Commission says 43-year-old Michael Coppola handed in his resignation Aug. 15 as chief of the Palisades Interstate Parkway police department.

Bergen County prosecutors allege that he went to a post office box earlier this month to retrieve the order, for which detectives had substituted imitation cocaine, and was arrested during a motor vehicle stop in Ridgefield Park.

Coppola is charged with attempting to possess cocaine and possession of drug paraphernalia. He’s scheduled to make a court appearance Wednesday.

Coppola joined the department in 1996 and became chief in 2014; it’s unclear whether he has a lawyer.

The Palisades Police Department have a long history of harassing Hatzolah ambulances as they transport patients from Monsey / New Square to Manhattan. The Parkway Police have in the past refused to allow Hatzolah to treat patients injured in car accidents, despite the fact the the victims themselves called Hatzolah for assistance. The Department has issued summonses to a Chaveirim volunteer for changing a flat tire inside a rest area on the Parkway as well.

  1. Oh come on. This has got to be fake news. All cops are angels and saints. They are our only true role models. We must continue to kiss up to Mr. Coppola nonetheless. Ulaiy, efsher, lichiora, mistama, we might somehow need him in the future. He should definitely be honored and given kavod by our Mosdos dinners.
