CRISIS IN VIRGINA: Democrats Stunned as Scandal Embroils State’s 3 Top Lawmakers

Front page of the NY Post on Thursday, Feb. 7

With Virginia’s top three elected officials engulfed in scandal, fellow Democrats were rendered practically speechless, uncertain of how to thread their way through the allegations and their tangled political implications that could put a Republican in the governor’s chair.

Gov. Ralph Northam’s career was already in peril over a racist photo in his 1984 medical school yearbook when the state’s attorney general acknowledged Wednesday that he, too, put on blackface once, when he was in college, and a woman publicly accused the lieutenant governor of sexually assaulting her 15 years ago.

While nearly the entire Democratic establishment rose up against Northam during the past week to demand he resign, party members largely withheld judgment on the two latest developments, which threaten to cause a political chain reaction that could make a GOP legislative leader the governor.

President Donald Trump accused the Democrats of a political double standard, tweeting: “If the three failing pols were Republicans, far stronger action would be taken.”

Democratic Sen. Barbara Favola said Wednesday: “I have to take a breath and think about this. This is moving way too quickly.” GOP House Majority Leader Todd Gilbert said it would be “reckless” to comment. “There’s just too much flying around,” he said.

Some clarity on the way forward could come from Virginia’s Legislative Black Caucus, which was preparing a statement on the crisis. The caucus has been calling for Northam’s resignation but was silent about the latest developments.

The group’s chairman, Del. Lamont Bagby, said it needs time to sort out the series of revelations. Many Democrats are likely to follow the group’s cues. “We’ve got a lot to digest,” Bagby said Wednesday.

Quentin Kidd, a political science professor at Christopher Newport University, had initially predicted Northam would be unable to hang on to office for more than a week. Now, with all three top Democrats in trouble, the equation has changed, he said.

He said it is possible all three could survive just out of necessity because House Speaker Kirk Cox, a conservative Republican, would be in line for the governor’s mansion if Northam, Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax and Attorney General Mark Herring all resigned.

“What was Democrats’ moral clarity on Friday has given way by Wednesday to the reality that Democrats could lose power completely at the executive level,” Kidd said. He likened the situation to three sinking boats “that suddenly lash themselves together and find they can float.”

Meanwhile, the Rev. Al Sharpton said in a fiery speech at historically black Virginia Union University that the matter should be dealt with swiftly. He said Northam and Herring must step down over their blackface admissions, and the allegations against Fairfax should be investigated thoroughly.

The civil rights leader said he came to Richmond to deliver a message to the governor: “I’m not going to be your minstrel!”

Members of the crowd of 300 students, faculty, clergy and political leaders shouted in agreement and jumped to their feet several times during Sharpton’s speech.

The governor is under fire over the discovery of a photo on his yearbook profile page of someone in blackface standing next to a person in a Ku Klux Klan hood and robe. Northam initially said he was in the photo, then denied it, but acknowledged putting shoe polish on his face for a dance contest in Texas in 1984, when he was in the Army.

On Wednesday, Herring, who had been urging Northam to step down, admitted wearing blackface to look like a rapper during a party when he was a 19-year-old at the University of Virginia in 1980. He apologized for his “callous” behavior and said the days ahead “will make it clear whether I can or should continue to serve.”

Then Vanessa Tyson, a 42-year-old college professor from California, put out a detailed statement alleging Fairfax assaulted her in 2004, in a hotel room at the Democratic National Convention in Boston.

Fairfax has repeatedly denied the allegations, saying that the encounter was consensual and that he is the victim of a strategically timed political smear.

Tyson said, “I have no political motive. I am a proud Democrat.”

“Mr. Fairfax has tried to brand me as a liar to a national audience, in service to his political ambitions, and has threatened litigation,” she said. “Given his false assertions, I’m compelled to make clear what happened.”

Democrats have expressed fear that the uproar could jeopardize their chances of taking control of the GOP-dominated Virginia legislature this year after big gains in 2017.

At the same time, the Democrats nationally have taken a hard line against misconduct in their ranks because women and minorities are a vital part of their base and they want to criticize Trump’s behavior without looking hypocritical.

  1. Dressing up in a tasetless costume is hardly a scandal, especially for a young person. And the charge of misconduct against the Lt. Governor was investigated by the authorities at the time and found to be baseless.

The Democrats made a policy of making wild dubious charges and the Republicans are paying them back.

We now see that from a policy perspective, our law of לשון הרע is tremendous superior in practice, and well thought out.

  2. Just about every politician in Virginia (R and D) has some baggage. Each of hese guys will find some way of doing political tshuvah and hang on. Check CNN website for their really excellent and funny reprise of how many politiicans on both sides of the aisle managed to avoid resignation amid political scandals. If the Trumpkopf can openly talk about sexual assault and engage in racist rhetoric and become the “darling” of the religious right, these three Dems could probably be reelected by even wider margins (if the alternative was a Republican).

  3. On of the thing that creeps me out of my birthplace the ,USA,that it has a lot of bad and sad baggage from the past. What the South, and all the way even to Texas and Nebraska did to the blacks is downright scary. It was scary how they killed them and a lot of the population would come and cheer them on,and took pictures, and felt fully justified in what they did.
The South felt a responsibility to put the blacks in their place, after the Civil War,and if any black did a little thing wrong that the Southerners did not appreciate, they would torture and lynch the defenseless black man or woman, and the white people, even young children would come to cheer them on,and take pictures, and absolutely no one ever was charged with any crime.
So it does not surprise me that there are still racists down South.
Did people really think that with former President Obama getting elected, that would make this problem go away???No,and it is still; there, and would still be around even if President Trump was not here, for the roots of absolute pure hate that the Southerners have for the blacks is hard to uproot completely, and unfortunately it still lingers to a certain degree.

  4. Wait let me understand
They felt these are offenses for which resignation is proper
But when they realized that would put a republican in power then it’s no longer proper?
    So it’s pretty clear
Women and blacks are more important that republicans but democrat power is more important that women and blacks?
So it really is all about the party above all?
    Communism anyone?

By the way I personally am greatly offended that comparison can be made to a teenager putting polish on his face to look like a rapper, who was black. That’s just the way it was.
    To a sexual assault.
    Crazy
