NYC Mayor Has His Police Detail Pull Over Texting Driver

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio says he was happy to be a “citizen patrol” when he directed his police detail to pull over a texting driver.

The Democratic mayor says the traffic stop occurred Saturday while he was heading to a legislative event in Albany.

The New York Post reports de Blasio saw a driver texting in the car next to his on the FDR Drive in Manhattan.

De Blasio said on Tuesday that the woman needed an “on-the-spot education” about the dangers. The lesson included a ticket.

It is illegal for New York drivers to use mobile devices. Fines can range from $50 for a first offense to $400 for more than three violations.

  1. She got a “warning ticket” but I suspect she will not be a repeat offender. Cynics will say the mayor was probably texting too but he was in the back seat with a police driver up front.

Are we allowed to be a “citizen patrol” to police officers who go through a red light while their siren isn’t on (or those that just turn them on for the light), or double park (also if siren isn’t on)?

  3. But yet the hypocrite has his “detail” speed thru local streets, blow thru red lights and stop signs in order to get to the gym because he is running late, and everything is beseder.
We are living in a police state.

  4. To sifsei chach: What is the word for a texting driver who kills a member of your family because the texting driver’s eyes were not on the road? I have a few, but YWN, rightly, won’t print them.
