Trump Says He Supports Making Daylight Saving Time Permanent

President Trump apparently is tired of switching clocks just like everyone else.

Coming off a universally sleep-deprived weekend during which America set the clocks to spring forward an hour, Trump tweeted that he’s “O.K.” with making Daylight Saving Time “permanent” — in other words, enough with the clock changing.

“Making Daylight Saving Time permanent is O.K. with me!” Trump tweeted Monday.

State legislatures across the nation are considering eliminating the practice of changing the clocks twice a year, calling it confusing and ineffective. The practice was originally intended to increase the number of sunlit hours during the workday, but research suggests it actually decreases productivity.

The president would need to work with Congress in order to repeal the 1966 Johnson-era law. Republican Florida Sens. Marco Rubio and Rick Scott filed a bill last week to extend daylight saving time for the entire year, called the Sunshine Protection Act. The Florida legislature voted last year to adopt the measure, but in order for it to take effect, Congress must change the federal law, and Trump must sign it.

His Monday morning tweet seemed to signal that should such a proposal make it to his desk, he would do so.

  1. Permanent daylight savings time would be a big problem for Jews living in the Northeast. Imagine if Netz HaChamah in NYC is 8:20.
I hope UO and RCA will lobby against this.

  2. Not good for frum jews.

For several months (approximately nov-feb) this would mean sunrise would be after 730. As late as 820 by end of dec. Which means earliest time for talis would be a little less than an hour before, ranging from about 630-720 diring those 4 months. What are working people with lengthy commutes supposed to do?

And that’s just NY area. If you go to the western end of a time zone like Detroit you’ll have days in dec/jan where one can’t put on talis until 8:00 AM

This also means that children going to school in the morning, will often be going in the dark.

Kollel or yeshivos or any Jewish owned businesses can just adjust their start/end times to accommodate. But what about the many frum men who work for govt or industries where start times can be as early as 8:00 ?

  3. Daylight Savings is the FAKE time. STANDARD is the REAL time. If anything, it should be standard.

That being said there are very good reasons why we have daylight savings time.

  4. We can definitely count on First Son in Law, Jared to explain the problems that year rould daylight savings time would cause for Yiddin.
