HE GETS IT: DeSantis Mocks New York’s Soft on Crime Policies, Crushing Taxes

During a speech in Las Vegas, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis criticized New York State for allowing criminals to run rampant on the streets and failing to improve the quality of life for its citizens.

DeSantis touted Florida’s “better roads, better services higher performing K-12 schools and no income tax” despite having a budget twice as small as New York’s and encouraged those considering moving to Florida to take advantage of the lack of income tax.

“What is New York doing by taxing people? What are they doing spending all this money on? It’s not improving the quality of life? I can tell you that,” DeSantis said.

DeSantis predicted that New York would continue to raise taxes to accommodate bail reform policies, which he deemed “unfunded liabilities.”

“You know what else doesn’t work? The cities and these left-wing states allowing criminals to run wild on our streets. That doesn’t work,” he said. “We in Florida stand for law and order. We don’t believe in coddling criminals, we believe in prosecuting criminals.”

DeSantis also criticized other progressive cities such as San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Portland for their soft-on-crime policies.

He was in Las Vegas to promote his new book “The Courage to Be Free: Florida’s Blueprint for America’s Revival,” in which he outlines how Florida navigated through the COVID-19 pandemic.

Many expect DeSantis to announce his candidacy for the 2024 presidential election after the Florida legislative session concludes in mid-May.

  1. DeSantis ignores the fact that his state has a much higher homicide rate than New York, with skyrocketing property taxes and property insurance rates. New York is better governed.

  2. Modern, the South has always had a higher murder and violent crime rate than the North, due entirely to the historical cultural and demographic differences. But the reduction in Florida’s rate from its historical levels is far greater than that in New York. In great measure because Florida respects the second amendment, so people can and do defend themselves from criminals. The justified homicide rate in Florida is far higher than it is in NY, which is a good thing.
