WILLIAMSBURG: Massive 5-Alarm Inferno Destroys 9 Stores, Firefighters Injured [VIDEOS]

Dozens of FDNY firefighters battled a fast-moving fire in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn. The fire was apparently sparked at “Grill On Lee” at Lee Avenue and Williamsburg Street East.

Emergency crews arrived at Lee Avenue and Hooper Street just before midday on Sunday in Williamsburg, requesting additional units within minutes of getting to the blaze. The first floor inferno started in a chocolate shop and spread to nine nearby retail stores prompting a swift evacuation of the building. By 1:15 PM the blaze was declared a five alarm inferno, with 9 stores fully engulfed in flames.

There was a massive response from Williamsburg Hatzolah.  Nine firefighters and one Paramedics were injured.

The stores affected are: Grill On Lee, Chocolate Wise, Eidlis Shoes, What A Bargain, Rite Site Optical, Exterminator, Saw Splendid, Hair Stylist, Falkowitz Cakes.

  1. B’H everyone seems ok!

As a side point YWN, the article states two contradictory statements.

“The fire was apparently sparked at ‘Grill On Lee’ at Lee Avenue and Williamsburg Street East.”

“The first floor inferno started in a chocolate shop and spread to nine nearby retail stores…”

    Which one was it?

  2. Chevrah: you need to be Medayek. The SPARK came from Grill on Lee, the INFERNO, started in the chocolate shop.

On a serious note, although we can hope and assume that all those businesses had ample insurance coverage, it’s simply a devastation for a neighborhood. I would imagine that the majority of customers for all 8-9 stores are all the same people who depend on these stores for all their shopping.
