As reported by YWN dozens of times over the past few years — including our March 2024 article “FIFTY BLOWOUTS! 5 Chaveirim Branches Respond To Massive Blowouts Incident In Manhattan” — the ramp off the George Washington Bridge has been a consistent nightmare for motorists, with hundreds of flat tires and blowouts plaguing drivers week after week.
For years, volunteers from Chaveirim across multiple branches have rushed to the scene to assist stranded motorists and replace damaged tires — often in treacherous late-night conditions. Their relentless advocacy and coordination with local officials have now paid off.
After sustained efforts and on-site visits, the New York City Department of Transportation has confirmed it will repave the problematic ramp — a major victory for Chaveirim and New York motorists alike.
🚧 Work Schedule:
-
Phase 1: Southbound lanes closed from October 27–31 (11 PM–5 AM)
-
Phase 2: Northbound lanes closed from November 3–7 (11 PM–5 AM)
All lanes will be reopened each day between 5 AM and 11 PM.
Brooklyn Chaveirim coordinator Shloime Fleischmann told YWN this long-awaited project is the direct result of teamwork and persistence.
“We want to extend a special thank-you to NYS Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein, Pinny Ringel from NYC DOT, and Ira Tenenbaum, Assistant Commissioner at NYC Emergency Management, for their partnership and support in making this project a reality,” Fleischmann said.
After years of shredded tires, stranded drivers, and sleepless nights for volunteers, Chaveirim’s efforts have finally led to lasting change — ensuring a smoother and safer commute for thousands who use the George Washington Bridge every day.
