Spirit Airlines is officially going out of business after 34 years, becoming the first major corporate casualty linked to the economic fallout from the Iran war.
The bankrupt discount carrier ceased operations after reportedly failing to secure creditor backing for a proposed U.S. government bailout plan.
The collapse comes as jet fuel prices have surged dramatically during the two-month conflict with Iran, placing enormous pressure on airlines already struggling financially.
Thousands of jobs are expected to be lost as a result of the shutdown.
President Donald Trump had reportedly pushed a $500 million rescue proposal for the airline last week, despite opposition from some Republican lawmakers and advisers. Trump argued the airline’s collapse would hurt consumers and competition in the aviation industry.
At its peak, Spirit accounted for roughly 5% of all U.S. flights and was known for keeping fares low in markets dominated by larger carriers.
No U.S. airline of Spirit’s size has liquidated in more than 20 years.

Trump’s economy is a disaster for hard working Americans. While gas prices are climbing through the roof he sees fit to slap more tariffs on countries. He has money for all his pet projects but has no money for ACA subsidies. He promised healthcare reform but has delivered nothing besides negotiating down a few drug prices. The average hard working American is paying hundreds if not thousands of dollars of more per month with no end in sight and now costs of travel will skyrocket and Iran still has its nuclear material, its radical government is in full control, Hizbullah reigns death on Israel and meron and now America looks weak and rudderless and as clueless how to get out of this mess.
You can thank Biden for this. Biden stopped another carrier from buying Spirit.
Right, Biden gov blocked merger reasoning that it will be better for competition. Somehow, the government experts did not understand business. ** surprise **
Another reason – airlines often take insurance/hedge against oil price rising. Apparently, they were so happy that anti-oil party left the government that they stopped hedging in 2025. Took too much risk.
spirit was in trouble long before the war with iran. but it’s obvious that if rising fuel prices push fares up, the budget airlines will be the ones most immediately affected. if they put prices up, they lose passengers, and if they don’t, they lose money.
Businesses whose model is for cheap prices also high smaller profit margins. They tried to become the “cheap” part of another airline, but the Democrats blocked it.
Crazy- we get it. You hate Trump. But your comments nearly always failed to reflect reality. Spirit was going to go out of business during the Biden administration. Spirit and JetBlue arranged for a merger. The Biden administration assisted by the push of the fake Indian from Massachusetts Pocahontas prevented the merger and this is what a lot of people expected would happen if the merger was not allowed.
No, a JetBlue takeover of Spirit would not have helped keep prices low for the flying public. On the contrary, it would have given JetBlue a massive share of the New York-to-Florida route and hurt competition. Spirit knew the hostile takeover by JetBlue was doomed from the start, and that is why it recommended an initial merger with Frontier. JetBlue is not a ULCC. A standalone Spirit was in consumers’ best interest. Trump’s bungling of the Starits of Hormuz is costing us all dearly.
Sadly, the negative effects of Trump and Bibi’s mismanagement are not just limited to Spirit.
