NYC: Snow Storm Blamed For Man’s Death

As heavy, wet snow continues to pile up across the five boroughs, it’s already being blamed for one death after a tree branch fell on a man walking through Central Park this afternoon.

Police say a 53-year-old man was walking near East 67th Street and 5th Avenue around 4 p.m. when he was struck by a snow covered branch.

The man’s name has not been released.

Fallen tree branches have also caused street closures on Fifth Avenue between 67th and 77th Streets.

The Parks Department is advising people to avoid public parks tonight and use caution near street trees.

Residents are urged to report fallen trees to 311.

Alternate-side parking rules and meter rules remain in effect for today, but they will be suspended tomorrow.

Parking meters will remain in effect tomorrow.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg says that even if the accumulation picks up a bit, schools are scheduled to remain open tomorrow.

The storm is also affecting travel along the East Coast.

Hundreds of flights have been cancelled in and out of local airports.

Due to the weather conditions, some arriving flights into LaGuardia Airport are delayed an average of 4 hours and 10 minutes.
