Monroe: New court system closer to reality.

A new court will not only place more control of fees and justices in the hands of the village, but also will relieve the workload of one of the busiest town courts in Orange County. That’s the latest rationale by village officials who are trying to sell a proposed revival of a village court.

Village officials approved the justice court – abolished in 1984 – two weeks ago but must wait until May 17, when a 30-day grace period ends, to enact the proposal. The 30 days allow residents to petition for a special vote on the proposal.

The village has so far received no petitions. If no one petitions by the deadline, the village will appoint a justice and acting justice at its first meeting in June, with justices likely handling cases starting in July.
