Note To Weprin: An Earthquake Is Not A Joke

Career politician David Weprin has again crossed the line in using today’s frightening East Coast earthquake as an opportunity to attack businessman Bob Turner (R). In a news release issued an hour after the quake, the Weprin campaign blaringly announced an “Earthshaking Development,” which turned out to be yet another mindless campaign attack on Mr. Turner – like the ones former New York City Mayor Ed Koch (D) has repeatedly asked Mr. Weprin to halt.

“Today’s earthquake frightened a lot of New Yorkers, including children and seniors citizens who remain deeply unsettled from the tremors,” said Turner campaign spokesman William O’Reilly. “Using a terrifying incident like an earthquake – an hour after it occurred – as a political punch line is highly inappropriate.  We would ask that Mr. Weprin use better judgment in the remaining days of this campaign.”

Mr. Turner and Weprin are in a neck-in-neck race to fill the congressional seat recently vacated by disgraced Congressman Anthony Weiner (NY-9). The Siena Research Poll released a survey last week showing Mr. Turner trailing by just six points, 42-48, in the heavily Democratic district.

Mr. Turner (R) a former television executive who has lived his entire life in the neighborhoods of the 9th Congressional District.  Career politician David Weprin, who lives outside the district, has held or sought four separate political offices in the past two years — City Council, City Comptroller, State Assembly, and now Congress.

Mr. Turner has been endorsed for Congress by both Republicans and Democrats, including former New York City Mayor Ed Koch (D) and former Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R). Mr. Turner’s business career has taken him around the globe.

The special election will be held on Tuesday, September 13.
