NYPD: Bodies of Missing S.I. Boys Found in Marsh

Police say the bodies of two young Staten Island boys who were reported missing in the aftermath of Sandy have been found in a marsh.

The boys, ages 2 and 4, were found about 15 yards from each other up against debris and a tree in the marsh on Father Capodanno Boulevard three days after their mother told police they were swept away by a storm surge when Sandy hit Monday night.

Police say the boys’ mother positively identified them at the scene.

She had told police that as the water started to rise Monday, the car stalled and she got out of the car clutching the younger boy in her arms and her older son by the hand.

As the surge came through, she lost her grip on her son and the boys were swept away by the water, she told police. She said she tried to get help but no one was around.

More than a dozen police officers from the NYPD Scuba Unit had fanned out across the area to search for the boys after they were reported missing. The mother’s blue SUV was pulled out of the marsh earlier Wednesday.

At least 36 deaths in New York City have been attributed to Sandy.

  1. While disasters like Sandy kill a large amount of people, I am extra saddened to hear that people still die out of sheer negligence.

  2. Their house was not in the evacuation zone. I think the zones need to be reevaluated to any such tragedies for future storms.

  3. I know the family personally. I know the mother was not a negligent mother. I hate when people judge without knowing the people and the whole story. It’s a very sad story and the negative comments need to stop. If you have a negative comment you can keep it to yourself. Not everything you think must be said aloud or posted for the world to see.

  4. Uneeq- I don’t know how you could post that comment after reading this story. What a horrible tragedy. Blaming the mother is just heartless.
