Long Island Expressway Reopens After Fatal 35 Vehicle Crash

The Long Island Expressway reopened just before 6 a.m. on Thursday after a fiery crash involving a tractor-trailer and dozens of other vehicles. One person was killed and 33 people were injured Wednesday afternoon.

The tractor trailer slammed into several cars in the eastbound lanes, police said. That prompted a chain reaction of crashes involving 35 vehicles in all, police said.

The tractor trailer, which was carrying storm debris, and some of the cars burst into flames. The fires were so intense that they melted some cars down to the frames, reported Fox 5’s Dan Bowens.

At least 33 people were hurt, police said. One person, a 68-year-old woman who was driving a Toyota Camry, died, police said.

At least two people, including a 57-year-old man, suffered serious injuries, police said. The driver of the tractor trailer was not seriously hurt. He and several other witnesses are being questioned.

Investigators impounded the tractor trailer and several cars for safety checks.
